Jun Murai, Dean of the Faculty of Environment and Information Studies, Inducted into the Internet Hall of Fame

(c) Takanobu Kawatsu Jun Murai, Dean of the Faculty of Environment and Information Studies (Professor, Faculty of Environment and Information Studies), has been inducted into the 2013 Internet Hall of Fame by the Internet Society (ISOC; headquarters near Washington, DC, USA, and in Geneva, Switzerland). Previous inductees to the Internet Hall of Fame include Dr. Vinton Cerf, co-father of TCP/IP and an Honorary Doctorate recipient from Keio University, and Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web. Inductees are selected in three categories: "Pioneers," "Innovators," and "Global Connectors." Dean Murai was inducted in the "Pioneers" category, which recognizes individuals who played a key role in the early development of the internet, making him the first Japanese national to receive this honor.

Dean Murai is known as the "father of the internet" in Japan and the "Internet Samurai" abroad. In 1984, he established the Japan University UNIX Network (JUNET), connecting academic institutions with Japan's first computer network. In 1988, he launched the WIDE Project, a Japanese internet research consortium. His many contributions to the global internet led to his induction in the "Pioneers" category.

In 2005, he received the Jonathan B. Postel Service Award from the Internet Society (ISOC) for his contributions to the spread of the internet in the Asia-Pacific region. In 2011, he received the IEEE Internet Award.
