Why I Chose SFC and My Journey to University Entrance
The very first reason I decided to go to university was back in my first year of junior high school, when I was vaguely drawn to the glamorous image of Keio and wanted to get in. From then until my second year of high school, I studied diligently and was in the top 10% of my class at the mid-level private integrated junior and senior high school I attended in the countryside.
Around the fall of my second year of high school, I struggled with communication at school and developed something like a mental illness. I was no longer able to attend school, so in the spring before my third year, I transferred to a correspondence high school. It was when I was thinking, "It's hard to focus on studying for entrance exams due to my mental health struggles, but I still want to go to a good university," that I found SFC. At SFC, I could take the exam with just two subjects, and I thought, "If it's only two subjects, maybe I can do it." This was because I had already earned most of my credits by the spring of my second year before transferring from the integrated junior and senior high school. This meant that during my third year at the correspondence school, my regular schoolwork was mostly finished, allowing me to dedicate the entire year to English and the short essay. Another major reason I aimed for SFC was that I wanted to use the difficult experiences I had in high school to work towards a better society.
I actually took the general screening for both faculties in English and the short essay, and since I was accepted into the Faculty of Environment and Information Studies, that is where I enrolled.
What Are Your Recommended Study Methods?
I attended a Juku for both English and the short essay.
For the short essay, I had it graded at a Juku where I could get feedback from current SFC students. I solved so many past exam questions that by the day of the exam, I was so immersed in SFC's short essays that I could actually enjoy tackling the questions.
The Connection Between My High School Studies and My Current Learning at SFC
For me, the connection between my high school studies and my current learning at SFC feels less about the specific content and more about my attitude toward studying. I feel that my studies up through high school cultivated an attitude of making a plan for an event like a regular exam and pouring all my effort into getting a good score. Also, studying various subjects in parallel is a bit like conducting research and other activities concurrently, and I believe this has led to my ability to work hard on multiple fronts now.
A Message for Prospective Students
I feel that I am living a fun and fulfilling university life, including the tough and painful times. I have no regrets about choosing SFC, and I will continue to be active so that I can be even more proud of myself for making that choice. We are waiting for all of you who want to change society with your own power at this incredibly interesting campus, where you can shape your experience in any way you choose. It's all up to you!
