Why I chose SFC and the journey to university admission
My mother is an SFC graduate. It was also close to my home, and I had been visiting SFC for school festivals and other events since I was a child, so I knew of its existence. However, it wasn't until high school that I came to recognize it as a "university as a research institution."
The proximity to my home, the lush greenery, the liberal academic culture—the more I learned about SFC, the more I fell in love with it, and I felt I had to aim for it. To get into SFC, my first choice, I prepared for both the AO Entrance Examination and the general entrance examination to increase my chances, without being particular about which one.
My determination and hard work for SFC paid off, and I was able to pass through the AO Entrance Examination. As a result, I did not take the exams for the private science and engineering universities I had been preparing for as backups. When I received my acceptance, the application for the Common Test for University Admissions was open, so I took the Common Test and the exam for a national science and engineering university just for the experience. I also received acceptances from other universities through AO and other early admission processes, but I'm glad I chose SFC.
What are your recommended study methods?
For everyone aiming for the AO Entrance Examination and for those aiming for the general entrance examination, I recommend tackling past exam questions as early as possible.
If you solve about 15 years' worth of questions for both the Faculty of Policy Management and the Faculty of Environment and Information Studies, I feel you'll start to understand what kind of students the university is looking for.
For the short essay, it's a good idea to have as many SFC students as possible read it. And don't just have them check for typos; try to have a discussion with them about the content.
The connection between my high school studies and my current learning at SFC
I love to travel, so I entered SFC with the intention of conducting research related to travel.
When I first enrolled, I didn't think there was much connection to my high school studies. As I took classes at SFC, I became interested in natural sciences and meteorology and joined a meteorology research group. Currently, I am researching aircraft lightning strikes. In fact, I started this research because I felt it was necessary to make space "travel" a reality.
In high school, I wasn't particularly good at science subjects, but I had chosen my courses with an eye on taking exams for a national science and engineering university. Since my research interests changed significantly after entering SFC, I am truly glad that I didn't give up on science subjects back then.
At SFC, many students take a wide range of classes in the process of deciding on their research. I was one of them, so I feel that my high school studies have been quite useful.
