Why I Chose SFC and My Journey to University
I had known about SFC for a long time because a relative of mine is an SFC graduate. I wanted to study urban issues, but I wasn't very interested in architecture, so I was unsure which university or faculty to choose. Amidst this, I felt that at SFC, with its faculty members from a wide range of fields, I might find a professor who matched what I wanted to learn, so I decided to apply. The fact that its academic level was a good fit for me was also a reason I applied.
Since my first choice was a national university, I wanted to focus on its entrance exam and did not apply through AO (Admissions Office) entrance examinations. In the end, I was not accepted by my first-choice university, so I decided to enroll at SFC.
What Are Your Recommended Study Methods?
For English, I had been studying ahead at a Juku since my first year of junior high, so by the fall of my second year of high school when I decided to apply to SFC, the knowledge was already in my head. Therefore, for my exam preparation, I focused solely on working through past exam papers. The SFC English exam tends to require a strong vocabulary, but in my case, I didn't spend much time on vocabulary and compensated with my grammar skills.
For the short essay, in addition to solving past questions, I consulted the SFC website and school brochures to understand what values are considered important at SFC. I also made it a habit to watch the news regularly and form my own opinions.
The Connection Between My High School Studies and My Current Learning at SFC
In high school, geography was my best subject. At SFC, I rarely use my knowledge of geography in either the entrance exams or my classes, but I feel that my broad interest in geography was what prompted me to start my research on compact cities.
Also, at SFC, there are many opportunities for discussion, both in class and when talking with friends. Thanks to my studies in high school, which focused on output rather than just inputting knowledge, my life at SFC has become much richer.
A Message for Prospective Students
Learning at university is completely different in nature from learning up to high school. While learning up to high school often has the goal of enriching one's knowledge and experience, learning at university is a tool to get closer to the society and future you want to realize. If you pursue what values you want to cherish and what kind of future you want to live in, you should also find the theme you want to study.
SFC is the perfect place to master the theme you want to study. There are faculty members researching completely different fields using a variety of methods, allowing you to combine the knowledge and experience necessary for your theme. Among the students, there is a culture of respecting each other's research themes. And above all, many SFC students are proud of themselves.
I hope all of you will also hold hope for the future. Believe in yourselves. That will be of great help in your university entrance exams as well. And if you choose SFC, let's create the future together from this campus. After all, we are "students from the future."
