What is the SFC Camp for Designing the Future?
This year, the "Camp for Designing the Future" will be held as a new initiative. The "camp" is not a so-called "encampment," but an environment where you can learn the importance of utilizing your own abilities and experience in the field and linking your ingenuity to action.
Schedule
Tuesday, August 2, 2011, 9:00–17:30
Venue
Keio University Shonan Fujisawa Campus (SFC)

Workshops
WS01: Digi-Fab Workshop / The Future of Manufacturing
The times are steadily shifting from a mass-product orientation to a personal-product orientation. What is the next step? It is a transformation of the manufacturing process itself, that is, a transformation from mass fabrication to personal fabrication. In this world, the fabricator is not a company but an individual, and each person manufactures just one item of what they need, when they need it. The miniaturization of manufacturing machinery and digital technology have made this possible. At SFC, we call this worldview digital fabrication (Digi-Fab), and we open various manufacturing machines and information environments to students, practicing literacy education related to Digi-Fab. With further miniaturization and lower prices of equipment and further advances in digital technology, the day when true personal Digi-Fab, where each individual has a Digi-Fab environment, will be realized is not far off. In this workshop, through the experience of 100% custom manufacturing, you will understand the philosophy of personal Digi-Fab that SFC aims for and the importance of next-generation information and engineering literacy.

WS02: Little Press Workshop
In this workshop, we aim to experientially learn about our "reporting skills," "editing skills," and "expressive skills." In recent years, independently produced booklets from regional areas have been gaining attention and are beginning to be distributed through unique sales channels different from the past, such as general stores and cafes. "Little presses" can become a medium for expressing rich and diverse individuality through the ingenuity of their creators. Although produced in small numbers, media created for a specific, small readership shine a light on the "ordinary people and ordinary events" of each individual, making their kindness and strength shine. At the same time, they provide an opportunity to think about new ways of publishing and distributing media.

WS03: Social Design Workshop — Envisioning the World in 2040
What kind of world will unfold in 2040? While acknowledging the current situation of political turmoil, economic stagnation, and an unprecedented major earthquake, we have the freedom to envision the future. There are people who think deeply about things, people who connect them to draw a picture of the future, and people who put it into practice. We will consider and connect what the world will be like in 30 years from various aspects such as policy, systems, technology, institutions, and history. From SFC, which has welcomed students from the future, we will once again launch a workshop to think about the future that lies ahead.
SocialDesign
WS04: Social Innovation Workshop
In the process of high economic growth since 1955, depopulation has continued in regional cities, especially in mountainous and fishing villages. As a result, industries have declined, and it is becoming difficult in various places to maintain the infrastructure that supports community life, such as medical care, welfare, transportation, and schools. On the other hand, despite this situation, some regions have emerged where industrial promotion, migration, and settlement are being promoted through ingenuity. In this workshop, while taking an overview of the current situation in depopulated areas, we will set problem points through group work, and after sufficiently analyzing feasible solutions, we will make presentations. Then, through a discussion involving all participants, we aim to create practical knowledge that brings about social innovation.

WS05: Foreign Language Education Environment Design Workshop
A considerable amount of time has passed since the style of foreign language learning shifted from "teaching" to "learning." But have we truly been able to build a learner-centered learning environment? When we think about learning a foreign language, we need to start with the questions of why we learn foreign languages in the first place and which languages we should learn, and then consider the learning goals, content, and activities in a total package. From another perspective, we must consider the "human" issues of the teacher's role and the learner's psychology, the "material" issues of IT teaching materials and textbooks, and the "content" issues of the number of classes and the content of each class. In that sense, there is no single correct way to construct a foreign language learning environment, and various approaches are possible.
