Reseach overview
My research explores methodologies and real-world applications of design and innovation for adapting to social and environmental change and creating desirable futures. Working across design strategy, product and graphic design, architecture and spatial design, and digital technologies, I conduct practice-based research in collaboration with companies, governments, universities, research institutions, and local communities. In creativity research, I developed “Evolutional Creativity,” a methodology that applies the evolutionary mechanisms of mutation and selection to creative processes. The research investigates methods for generating, selecting, and evaluating ideas and their application to innovation and education. My climate adaptation research, “ADAPTMENT,” explores how principles of biological and ecological adaptation can inform the design of resilient watersheds, cities, buildings, and communities. This includes research on digital hazard maps that integrate and visualize spatial information such as topography, watersheds, and disaster risks, as well as information design and social systems that strengthen local adaptive capacity. I also research and develop AI-powered audio guides that combine generative AI, multilingual speech synthesis, and location-based technologies to connect people with places and knowledge. Related research on regional revitalization and local innovation explores how design and technology can reveal and communicate the distinctive natural, cultural, industrial, and intellectual assets of communities and generate new forms of social and economic value. Rather than treating these as separate fields, my research integrates design, biology, environmental science, AI, and systems thinking toward a comprehensive design discipline that enhances the creative adaptive capacity of individuals, organizations, and communities.
