本研究の目的は「王領地を例に、灌漑、収税、農産物の流通の過程とそれに関わる人びとの役割と関係性について考察し、15世紀後半から16世紀のエジプトにおける村落社会と地方統治の構造を明らかにすること」である。本研究は、地方統治の構造を従来の単線的な構図から脱却し、多層的、組織的な新しい構図を提示することを目指した。これには、まず、地方統治に関わる様々な人びとの存在、役割、関係性を明らかにする必要があると考えた。このため、本研究では、灌漑、収税、流通までの一連の過程を研究主題とした。徴税(本研究では「徴税」を、農地の灌漑・播種・耕作の管理から収穫、収税、農作物の売買や都市への運搬という流通までを含めて用いる)は毎年必ず行われる、いわば確立された行為や秩序であり、村落社会を規定する統治の柱として捉えることができる。また、収税システムとしてのイクター制の機能を分析することは、イスラーム史におけるイクター制の歴史的位置を明らかにすることにつながると考えた。 本研究は徴税を通じたエジプトの村落社会と地方統治の構造を対象とするが、その際にはその根本となる農業や灌概といった自然環境についても検討していく必要がある。そのためには、エジプト各地域の地理的差異を等閑視することはできない。そこで比較的史料が豊富であるファイユーム県に対象をしぼり考察を進めた。初年度は、2度(計2ヶ月間)にわたるエジプト国立文書館(カイロ)における史料蒐集を行い、16世紀前半に編纂されたファイユーム県の『土地調査台帳』、『灌漑堤防台帳』、『水分配台帳』などの各種台帳からの記録の抽出を行った。これらの記録から、地方統治において村落社会が果たす役割は大きく、支配者と村落社会による相互補完的な統治体制を見いだすことができ、従来の単線的かつ一方的な地方統治の構造を修正する展望が開けた。

The study focused on epidemics, climate change, and socioeconomic trends in the Middle East and North Africa (Arab region) from the latter half of the 13th century to the mid-16th century, which is the transition period from the Medieval Warm Period to the Little Ice Age. I dealt with the correlations and patterns, and pursued the environment in which humans were placed, the effects that environmental changes had on humans, and the human reactions to them. In the process, I also examined a method of analyzing the correlation between natural phenomena and human economic and social activities.

本研究は、10世紀から20世紀初頭のアフロ・ユーラシア地域における諸集団・国家の形成と拡大の重要な要因を、政治中心の移動と首都圏に見出し、それらの類型化と比較を行う。政治中心ないし首都圏の範囲・立地と水系の関係に焦点を当てることにより、植生・環境・資源などの要素も分析対象に含めつつ、それらの歴史的展開のダイナミズムを提示する。

Environmental History that focuses on the Middle East and North Africa region has recently attracted many scholars' attention and many books and journals have been published. However, such studies do not deal with long period that crosses existing periodizations such as ‘medieval’ and ‘modern’ because most of them are done by individual scholars. So long-term environmental history of the region has been still awaited. This study, focusing on Egypt, considered the possibility of long-term environmental history by examination of prior studies, sources, methods related to the field. As a result, it revealed that documentary sources are intermittently available in the Fayyum region, middle south of Egypt and they will enable to explore the area's long-term environmental history.

Historically, water rights have been rights of use rather than ownership, often including disposal rights. Water withdrawals are converted into hours and made available to beneficiaries on a fixed date and time. Depending on the region, they may be distributed to individual arable land owners, or villages or tribes. This difference largely depends on the quantitative scale of water resources and the magnitude of seasonal fluctuations. Through joint activities such as maintenance of water facilities, the social order over water resources was maintained mainly by those responsible for water management. However, there were clear lines based on regional relationships and social hierarchies underlying the perception of water rights.

The aim was to extract tacit knowledge and present strategic knowledge about establishing relationships and building trust across the entire Islamic civilization, from its beginning to the present time. As a whole field, the "Connecting from Islam" series has been published in eight volumes (The University of Tokyo Press, 2023-25). Volume 1 of the series, "An Invitation to the Study of Islamic Trust," provides a straightforward introduction to the content of this field, and from Volume 2 onwards, each research team has accumulated knowledge on Islamic economics, transformation of academic knowledge, migration and refugees, the Islamic state system, thought and strategy, peacebuilding, and digital humanities.

1970年代にイェルサレムで13-14世紀に書かれた900点ほどの「ハラム文書」とよばれる文書群が発見された。 その中の28点のペルシア語文書の研究はいまだ行われていない。また、14点のアラビア語文書は、28点のペルシア語文書とイラン北部の地名、文書形式、発行年代が共通し両者は一つの文書群をなす。 当研究は、これら42点の文書を解読し、テキストを作成し、翻訳し、既知の文書や既刊の文書集と比較・対照し、その結果をもとに国内外の文書研究者と議論し、それらの文書の資料的価値を決定し、研究成果を解説を付した資料集として出版し、13-14世紀モンゴル支配時代イランの社会史研究の基礎的資料とする。 当科研研究は2021年4月にはじまったが、文書を読解していくためにはまず東洋文庫所蔵の2000枚ほどのハラム文書のマイクロフィルムから、この科研で読むPersian文書とPersianate文書42点を選び出して焼き付けて研究分担者が共有しなければならなかった。このためには研究代表者が4月に東洋文庫を訪れて写真を選定してその焼き付けを申請する予定であった。しかし、幸いなことに2021年1月に東洋文庫が所有するマイクロフィルムのPDFが、そのオリジナルの所有者であるカナダのMcGill　Institute　of Islamic Studiesからオンライン上に上げられた。それをダウンロードし、PDFを全てをJPEGにして、全員が共有するクラウドDropboxの共有ファイルに収納し、それによって全てのハラム文書写真を全員が共有することができた。そして2021年7月から8月にかけて、3週間奈良大学の大学院生1名を雇用してデータベースソフトFile Maker Pro2に、Donald P. Littleによるカタログ（Beirut, 1984）情報とともに全ハラム文書のJPEGを貼り付け、ハラム文書のデータベースを完成させた。 9月以降、Dropboxの共有ファイル中のJPEGおよびデータベースをつかって月一回のペースでZoomによる研究会をひらいて文書を読み進め、現在まで予定の42点の文書中Persian７点、Persianate3点を解読した。 2021年5月に、Zoomによる研究会において研究分担者の伊藤隆郎博士にChristian Muller, Der Kadi und seine Zeugen, Wiesbaden, 2013の内容を詳細に紹介してもらった。 2021年6月24日に、Konrad Hirschler博士を長とするドイツのハラム文書を研究する3人と当研究会8人でシンポジウムをおこない、今後の研究協力について協議した。 2021年度はコロナ禍のため対面での研究会が一度ももてず、すべてzoomによるネット会議になったが、分担者たちの協力により月一回の研究会のペースをなんとか維持することができた。 当初予想していたよりも文書読解は進んでいない。それはpersianおよびpersianate文書が書かれているくずし字のアラビア文字の読解が予想をこえる困難さを伴っていたからである。今後文字に慣れていきさえすれば読解の速度はあがると思われる。 2022年度は昨年度通り月一回のぺースでネット上での研究会をおこなっていく。 2022年9月4日（日）から5日間イェルサレムのIslamic Museumで文書調査をおこない、ハラム文書全体のデジタルデータを購入予定。

This study investigates the interaction between environmental change, the state of village society, and the transformation of local administration in Egypt during the period of environmental change from the mid-fourteenth to the fifteenth century. The main issues discussed were, first, the practices of agricultural production, irrigation and tax collection in village society, and the relationships between people in relation to these practices and second, the changes in local administration as a reaction of the state to the various phenomena observed during the period of environmental change. These issues were addressed by analysing information on the practices and human relations of village communities from the archives of the Austrian National Archives and the records of the appointment of local administrators from the narrative sources.

In this study, we continue to analyze trade around Egypt by 1) clarifying the differences between the Mediterranean trade network with Alexandria as its hub, the long-distance sea routes with Port Said and the Suez Canal as its hub, and the Mediterranean-Red Sea coastal trade, the characteristics of the ships, and especially the connections with each of the European great powers, through a longitudinal analysis of data such as the number of ships (by flag) departing and arriving at each port along the Egyptian coast, and the size of the ships, etc. Ships passing through the Suez Canal were mainly British, but we also deciphered the colonial strategies of each of the European great powers, including Italy and Germany.

This research project has aimed to clarify the long-term characteristics of the agricultural and hydraulic practices and administration in pre-modern rural society in Egypt. It also has attempted to consider how rural society and state institutions reacted to environmental and socioeconomic changes. In order to pursue these issues, we employed not only contemporary sources but also sources from different periods and geographical information. We confirmed that the situation in other periods can be helpful for our interpretation as it fills our ignorance due to the lack of evidence. However, caution is required in using these sources as definitive evidence. As a result of this project, we published several studies on related topics not only for specialists but also for the general readership. We also sought directions for possible future research.

本研究の目的は「王領地を例に、灌漑、収税、農産物の流通の過程とそれに関わる人びとの役割と関係性について考察し、15世紀後半から16世紀のエジプトにおける村落社会と地方統治の構造を明らかにすること」である。本研究は、地方統治の構造を従来の単線的な構図から脱却し、多層的、組織的な新しい構図を提示することを目指した。 2年目となる平成25年度は、前年度に収集した史料をもとに、前近代のエジプトにおける灌漑(「ベイスン灌漑」と呼ばれる)の構造と、政府が灌漑の維持管理にどのように関わったか、また、村落社会が果たした役割について明らかにし、灌漑の維持管理に見られる支配の構造に踏み込むことができた。 考察は、夏季に増水するナイルの水を耕地に導き冠水させる灌漑方法「ベイスン灌漑」において、主要灌漑設備である土手の維持管理に焦点をあてた。前近代においては、土手は政府が管理する大規模な「政府の土手」と村が管理する小規模な「村の土手」に大分されたが、本考察では、「政府の土手」を対象とし、その維持管理に関わる16世紀オスマン朝の『土手台帳』の記録を手がかりに、1年を通じた土手の管理のあり方を追った。その結果、「政府の土手」は一定間隔でナイルに対して垂直に設置された土手であり、それを政府主導で管理することによって、上流と下流への適切な水の分配を可能にしたことを明らかにした。また、土手の維持管理には、政府の担当官と村人が関わるだけでなく、土手単位で配された地元の有識者や県単位で任命されたアラブ部族の長といった中間のアクターが存在したことを示した。 本研究の研究史上の意義は、まず、「政府の土手」が何であるかを明らかにした点である。これによって、「ベイスン灌漑」の時代に政府が果たした役割を明らかにすることが可能となった。また、GISを利用した地理的分析を通じて成果を発信したことも重要である。これにより、地理的視点が等閑視される傾向にある歴史研究において、地理的分析の有効性を示したと言える。

大戦間期の地中海・中東経済圏では、先発資本主義国と後発資本主義国が覇権を争い、列強植民地勢力と現地の民族主義勢力が対峙する激しい経済競争が展開された。そうした中で、日本は重要なアクターとなって行く。こうした錯綜した経済環境は、地中海・中東経済圏の綿花取引・金融の中心であるアレクサンドリアほかエジプトの港に関する貿易統計、特にスエズ運河の通貨船舶統計に端的に示されている。本研究では、スエズ運河通過船舶データを基礎資料に、大戦間期の日本における地中海・中東経済圏への経済進出の意味を地域横断的・学際的に明らかにする中で、大戦間期の世界経済地図におけるヨーロッパとアジアとの関係を見直すことを目指す。 本研究事業は、大戦間期における日本による地中海や中東への経済進出の意義について、史料および数量データに基づき明らかにすることを目的としている。１年目に当たる2024年度は、研究目的の達成に必要となる資料の収集作業が行われた。同時に、本研究事業の参加者が情報交換を行う機会として定期的に研究会を実施し、問題意識の共有および研究成果について議論を行った。本年度の研究実績を簡単にまとめると、①資料収集、および②収集資料の分析が挙げられる。 ①資料収集：本事業においては、４つの研究テーマを設定し、各テーマごとに作業が行われた。テーマの一つである「スエズ運河を介した世界交易ネットワークのなかの日本」に係る作業として、スエズ運河を通過・経由した船舶について、エジプト側およびインド側の貿易統計を収集したことである。当該資料収集は、日本による地中海・中東圏への進出について分析・検討を行うために実施された。このことから、日本による海上交易に関する資料の収集を中心に作業が行われ、これら資料は統計情報として整理された。また、同テーマの作業として、横浜正金銀行アレクサンドリア出張所・支店に関する資料収集が行われた。 ②収集資料の分析：まず、収集されたエジプト側およびインド側の貿易統計データより、ヨーロッパ船舶および日本を含むアジア船舶の動きを確認することができ、そこからは、地中海・紅海・インド洋交易ネットワークにおけるスエズ運河の重要性が再確認された。他方で、収集された横浜正金銀行アクレサンドリア支店のデータから、大戦間期において同支店はエジプトと日本との綿関連の貿易金融を中心に同地域で地歩を築いていったことが明らかになった。同時に、同支店は日本企業・商人のみならず、現地企業・外国企業からの信頼を得て、大戦間期という厳しい金融環境の中でビジネスを展開していったことも確認された。 データの収集および解析作業は順調に行われていることから、現状では、概ね順調に研究事業が展開されている。 本研究事業の研究テーマのうち、研究目的の達成に必要となる資料の収集および資料の解析作業を早期に進める。これにより、大戦間期の世界経済における日本の立ち位置、そして交易ネットワークから分かるヨーロッパとアジアとの関係を再検討することを目指す。

This study visualized and analyzed the structure of social and intellectual networks using digital humanities methods, focusing on interpersonal relationships recorded in biographical dictionaries and related sources from Islamic civilization. Drawing on a diverse range of materials, including biographical dictionaries from Egypt and the Maghrib, records of inquisitorial trials, and acknowledgments in modern Japanese doctoral dissertations, the project developed an analytical framework utilizing RDF, TEI, and network analysis tools. This enabled the comparative visualization of interpersonal relationships whose structures varied depending on region, sectarian affiliation, and the compiler’s perspective. Moreover, by critically addressing the limitations of visualization and the biases inherent in historical sources, the study offered new insights into the structures of trust and knowledge transmission in Islamic civilization.
