昨年度に引き続き, 球面S^n内の高種数の極小閉曲面を構成する問題について研究を行った. 研究の動機として, ラプラシアンの第1固有値を最大化する閉曲面上の計量が球面への極小はめこみによる誘導計量として与えられることが知られており, したがって, 球面内の高種数の極小閉曲面を構成することで, そのような最大化計量の候補が得られるということがある. 種数3以上の場合に最大化計量が未知であるので, とくに種数が低い例を与えることを目指している. LawsonによるS^3内の高種数極小閉曲面の構成を高次元化し, S^nの3角形分割として正2^{n+1}胞体を用いることで高種数の極小閉曲面を構成した. ただ, この構成で得られる極小閉曲面は自己交叉点を多く持ち, しかも種数が高くなる傾向がある(S^5, S^6で種数5, S^7で種数49等). 最大化計量を与える極小閉曲面は, 高い対称性を持つとともに, 自己交差が少ないことが期待されるので, 今後, 別の構成法を考案して, 自己交叉が少なく種数も低い例を見出したい. また, 昨年度に引き続き, 有限グラフのユークリッド空間への埋め込みに関する最適化問題と線形スペクトルギャップの最大化問題について研究を行なった. この研究は, 有限グラフの非線形スペクトルギャップの研究に動機付けられたものである. 類似の埋め込み最適化問題としてGoering-Wappler-Helmbergによるものが知られていたが, 両者の埋め込み最適化問題の関係を明らかにすることにより, 我々の埋め込み最適化問題の最適値と第線形スペクトルギャップの最大値の間にもある等式が成立することが示せた. また, アルキメデス多面体を始めとして対称性の高い様々な多面体について, Goering達および我々の埋め込み最適化問題の解を求めることができた.

A crystal lattice is an abelian covering infinite graph of a finite graph. The integer lattices, the triangular lattice, the hexagonal lattice are examples of crystal lattices. We define magnetic transition operators to describe electron transfer on a crystal lattice under periodic magnetic field. The definition is justified by the central limit theorem : Namely, we show that the semigroup generated by the magnetic transition operators converges to the semigroup generated by a magnetic Laplacian of the Euclidean space with the Albanese metric. Magnetic fields on a crystal lattice are defined in terms of the second group cohomology. Next we construct a C^*-algebra associated with the magnetic field and show the magnetic transition operator belongs to the C^*-algebra. By using this, we show the spectra of the magnetic transition operators is a Lipschitz continuous function in magnetic field. Without magnetic field, electrons behave like random walks. We show large deviation principle holds for random walks on a crystal lattice. By letting lattice spacing smaller, a crystal lattice converges to a finite dimensional vector space with a Banach norm in the Gromov-Hausdorff topology. This Banach norm is characterized in terms of the rate function appearing in the large deviation.

Bando studied the existence problems of Einstein metrics on Kahler manifolds and holomorphic complex vector bundles. It is believed that there must be good relations between the existence of Einstein metrics and stabilities. He obtained a useful formula on a functional which connects them. He also wrote a paper which shows how Green functions can be used to obtain harmonic geometric objects. Nishikawa, jointly with Keisuke Ueno (Yamagata Univ.), studied the Dirichlet problem at infinity for harmonic maps between homogeneous spaces of negative curvature, and the complex analyticity of harmonic maps between complex hyperbolic spaces. A proper harmonic map which is CィイD14ィエD1 upto boundary and gives non-degenerate CR map on the boundaries is shown to be holomorphic. Urakawa continued to study harmonic maps, Yang-Mills connections and etc., and generalized the methods to work on graphs. On finite or infinite graphs, he obtained results on the spectra of Laplace operators, the estimates on Green functions and the analog of harmonic maps. Ishida studied real fans which generalize (rational) fans which are closely related to toric varieties. He introduced a category of graded modules of exterior algebra over real fans and defined a dualizing functor. He obtained counterparts of Serre duality and Poincare duality. Takagi studied a reaction-diffusion system which is posed by A. Gierer and H. Meinhardt as a fundamental model of morphogenesis and a constrained variational problem on a bending functional which gives a model of the shape transformation of erythrocyte. Izeki studied entoropy rigidity and convex compactness of Kleinian groups acting on real space forms. He obtained a partial resolution of a conjectire on the inequality between the Hausdorff dimension of the limit sets of convex co-compact Kleinian groups and the cohomological dimension of the groups. Nakagawa studied Bando-Calabi-Futaki characters and generalized some of properties which were known to Fano manifolds to general projective manifolds and their Kahler classes. Under certain assumption, he showed a vanishing of Bando-Calabi-Futaki characters on the Lie algebra of unipotent groups and the existence of lifts of Bando-Calabi-Futaki characters to group characters.

リーマン面からリー群・対称空間への調和写像の研究に関しては、大仁田は、Guestとの共同研究で、有限次元および無限次元群の作用をループ群論におけるグラスマン模型を利用して、その幾何学的構造を明らかにした。その重要な応用として、Morse-Bott理論的な調和写像の変形により、いくつかの基本的な対称空間への調和写像の空間の連結性、基本群に関する成果を得た。これは、古田・小谷・向井らの協力が大きい。これらの成果は、論文にまとめられ発表予定あるいは投稿中である。 荻上は、複素微分幾何および部分多様体の研究を展開しており、若い研究者を大いに刺激し、この研究課題の推進に大きく貢献した。複素微分幾何への調和写像の方法の応用は、多くの人々の注目するところであり、今後多くの成果が期待されるので、この研究計画の継続はぜひ必要である。また、平均曲率一定の曲面などの部分多様体と可積分系の理論の関連は、現在、最も話題となっている領域であり、佐々井や若い研究者たちとも協力して、研究・調査・情報収集を続けて行く必要がある。 吉田は、ゲージ理論的方法による多様体の研究をしており、Floerホモロジーに関して大変重要で画期的な仕事をしている。それは、すでに発表されたり、現在 新しい成果を論文にまとめている。 大原は、ノットのエネルギー汎関数の導入に関して、非常に独創的な研究をしており、今後 大きな発展が期待され、注目されている。 井関は、共形的に平坦な多様体や共形構造の変形について活発に研究を進め、次々と新しい結果を得ている。そのような多様体と調和写像・ツイスター幾何学との関連は興味ある1つの問題である。 この研究課題において、正則ベクトル・代数多様体の理論は不可欠であり、笹倉・卜部・中島の協力は大きい。最近、長友は、四元数ケーラー多様体のゲージ理論で意欲的に良い仕事をしている。

リーマン面から対称空間への調和写像の研究に関しては、リーマン球面からの調和写像の空間の位相構造に関しては、まだまだ明らかにされていない問題も多いが、連結性・基本群に関する今までの結果を、より一般のコンパクト対称空間のあるクラスに拡張することができた。この結果は、国内のいくつかの研究会・シンポジウムとイギリスでの国際シンポジウムで発表し大変興味をもたれ、現在、大仁田は、M.A.Guest氏、向井との共同研究として論文を準備中である。今後の発展も期待されている。 可積分系(ソリトン方程式)の理論の調和写像、曲面論などの微分幾何学への応用に関する進展はイギリス・アメリカ・ドイツなどの研究者により次々現れており、われわれともかなり競争的な様相にある。前田氏・榎本氏の専門的知識の提供による研究協力もあり、荻上らの部分多様体の研究においても新しい結果が得られつつある。 井関は、多様体の共形構造を研究しているが、リーマン面のモジュライ空間であるタイヒュミラー空間の高次元版と考えて、共形的に平坦な構造のモジュライ空間に完備な距離を導入するという画期的な研究に成功した。 今井は、自身が開発した結び目のエネルギー汎関数のグラジエントを計算し、さらに研究を進展させている。 吉田・今野は、ゲージ理論的方法を用いて、symplectic幾何学、位相的場の理論などに大きな貢献をしている。特に、擬正則曲線のモジュライ空間の理論は、調和写像論およびその応用の立場から興味ある研究課題を提供するものである。 長友氏は、四元数ケーラー多様体上のヤン・ミルズ接続のゲージ理論で新しい展開を与えている。

We discuss long time asymptotic behaviors of the heat kernel on a non-compact Riemannian manifold which admits a discontinuous free action of an abelian isometry group with a compact quotient. A local central limit theorem and the asymptotic power series expansion for the heat kernel as the time parameter goes to infinity are established by employing perturbation arguments on eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of twisted Laplacians. Our ideas and techniques are motivated partly by analogy with Floque-Bloch theory on periodic Schrodinger operators. For the asymptotic expansion, we make careful use of the classical Laplace method. In the course of a discussion, we observe that the notion of Albanese maps associated with the abelian group action is closely related to the asymptotics. A similar idea is available for asymptotics of the transition probability of a random walk on a lattice graph. The results obtained in the present paper refine our previous ones. In the asymptotics, the Euclidean distance associated with the standard realization of the lattice graph, which we call the Albanese distance, plays a crucial role.

本研究の目的は,調和写像の無限遠境界値問題を一般の負曲率等質リーマン多様体に対して研究することである.このような空間の中で,カルノー群とよばれる巾零リー群の1次元可解拡大として得られる「カルノー空間」は,対称空間の一般化として重要なカテゴリーをなす.本研究の目標は,このカルノー空間のカテゴリーにおいて,理想境界として現れる巾零リー群上の幾何学・解析学と,内部領域として現れる可解リー群上の幾何学・解析学の相互関係を,「調和写像の無限遠境界値問題」を通して調べることであり,そのためにはまず,解として得られる調和写像の無限遠理想境界の近傍での正則性(微分可能性)を詳しく調べる必要がある. 昨年度の研究において,研究分担者・上野は,「複素双曲型空間形から実双曲型空間形への固有な調和写像で,無限遠境界まで連続的可能性をもって延びるものは存在しない」ことを証明したが,その際調和写像の無限遠境界での正則性は,カルノー空間の不変計量の無限遠境界の近傍での発散のオーダーと密接に関係することが明らかになった.今年度は,この点に関してさらに考察し,次の結果を得た. 1.定義域のカルノー空間のステップ数が,値域となるカルノー空間のステップ数よりも小さい場合(例えば,複素双曲型空間形から実双曲型空間形への場合),無限遠境界の近傍での不変計量の発散のオーダーが同じであっても,固有な調和写像の無限遠境界の近傍での漸近挙動は,その境界値から完全には決定できない. 2.定義域のカルノー空間のステップ数が,値域となるカルノー空間のステップ数よりも大きいか等しく,かつ無限遠境界の近傍での不変計量の発散のオーダーが同じである場合には,固有な調和写像の無限遠境界の近傍での漸近挙動は,その境界値から完全に決定される. 西川はこの結果を,上海で開催された国際研究集「International Conference on Modern Mathematics」において,招待講演として発表した.

Shin Nayatani and Hiroyasu Izeki studied combinatorial harmonic map theory and its application to super-rigidity and fixed point theorem, and proved fixed point theorems for isometric actions of discrete groups on CAT(O) spaces. Shin Nayatani and HIroyuku Kamada studied quaternionic CR geometry, and clarified the representation-theoretic meaning of the canonical pseudohermitian connection. Norio Ejiri studied the existence problem for non-area-minimizing stable minimal surface of genus g in 2g-dimensional flat tori, and proved that there exists a non-holomorphic stable minimal surface of genus【greater than or equal】4 in a certain 8-dimensional torus. Ryoichi Kobayashi srudied the construction of geometric theory of Diophantine approximation as discretization of the Nevanlinna theory, and showed that the lemma of logarithmic derivative for holomorphic curves in protective algebraic varieties hold always with the same form. Toshihiro Nakanishi introduced a parameter complexifying R.C.Penner's λ length on the spaces of equivalence classes of faithful representations from surface groups into SL(2,C) mapping homotopy classes of boundary components to parabolic elements. Using this he succeeded in representing the mapping class groups as groups of rational transformations. Motoko Kotani studied the large deviation of the random walk on a crystal lattice, that is, an infinite graph on which an abelian group acts and its geometric meaning. She determined asymptotic terms and clarified the relation between the rate function representing decay order and the tangent cone at infinity of a crystal lattice. Hiroshi Ohta completely determined the deformation classes of symplectic fillings of the links of simple singularities and simple elliptic singularities. He also studied the obstruction and deformation theories of the Floer cohomology using filtered A_∞ algebras. Takeshi Sato obtained some new algorithms to compute the value of π using various modular functions. Hiroyuki Kamada studied compact complex surfaces admitting scalar flat Kahler metrics, and characterized the product of complex projective lines in terms of the existence of such metrics with a certain type of symmetry. Kentaro Ito studied the boundary behavior of the deformation space of quasi-Fuchsian groups by means of the holonomy representations of projective structures on surfaces. He proved that Goldman's grafting theorem holds for the boundary groups by showing a certain kind of continuity and discreteness, thus resolving Bromberg's conjecture.

The purpose of this project was to investigate the stability/rigidity of discrete groups from the viewpoint of geometry of the ideal boundary of negatively curved spaces and the cohomology of deiscrete groups. Our main result is summarized as follows. Let Γ be a Kleinian group acting on n-sphere. If Γ is convex cocompact, the quotient of the domain of discontinuity is compact by definition. However, the converse is not true in general. Izeki (head investigator) showed that if the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set of Γ is less than n/2 and the quotient of the domain of discontinuity is compact, then Γ is convex cocompact. As a consequence, such a Γ is quasiconformally stable. We also gave several applications to topology and geometry of conformally flat manifolds with positive scalar curvature. In case the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set is less than (n-2)/2, we found a proof using the index theorem for higher A^^<^>-genus. We applied the index theorem to the quotient of the domain of discontinuity. We note here what we mean by the ideal bounary is just the quotient of the domain of discontinuity. The higher A^^<^>-genus carries the information of the fundamental group, which turns out to be isomorphic to Γ in our case, and that is all that the higher A^^<^>-genus knows. And it is determined by the cohomology of Γ.

The purpose of this project was to investigate the rigidity of discrete groups from the viewpoint of geometry of the ideal boundary of negatively curved spaces and the cohomology of discrete groups. Our main result is summarized as follows. Let Γ be a Kleinian group acting on n-sphere. If Γ is convex cocompact, the quotient of the domain of discontinuity is compact by definition. However, the converse is not true in general. Izeki (head investigator) showed that if the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set of Γ is less than n/2 and the quotient of the domain of discontinuity is compact, then Γ is convex cocompact. As a consequence, such a Γ is quasiconformally stable. We also gave several applications to topology and geometry of conformally flat manifolds with positive scalar curvature. In case the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set is less than (n - 2) /2, we found a proof using the index theorem for higher A-genus. We also developed another approach to rigidity problems, which uses harmonic maps from a simplicial complex to a negatively curved metric space. We obtained a fixed-point theorem for a lattice in a p-adic Lie group, which should be regarded as a generalization of Margulis superrigidity.

平成12年度の研究実績は以下の通りである. 結晶格子上のランダム・ウォークの推移確率の時間無限大での漸近挙動の解析をし,特に極限に現われるユークリッド構造を,結晶格子を調和写像によってユークリッド空間に標準的実現するときに定まるユークリッド計量として特徴付けた. この研究の拡張として,結晶格子に磁場がかかった場合の粒子の運動の時間無限大での漸近挙動を研究した.グラフは1次元なので「磁場」の定義自体が自明ではないが,結晶格子に作用するアーベル群の2次コホモロジーを磁束と読み替え,対応するグラフの弱不変1-コホモロジーをベクトル・ポテンシャルとみることで,磁場の中を動く粒子の運動を記述する磁場付き推移作用素を定義した.更に上記の結果と同様,ある条件のもとに,与えられた磁場に対応するベクトル・ポテンシャルは,適当なユークリッド空間上の線形ベクトル・ポテンシャルを標準的実現によって引き戻したものになることをみた.これにより磁場付き推移作用素の中心極限定理を得た. また,負曲率閉多様体上の閉測地線の分布は本質的に基本群の構造を調べることになるが,前述の仕事の過程で開発した手法により,長さがx以下の閉測地線の個数のxが無限大に近づくときの漸近挙動と,力学系で重要な圧力との関連を明らかにし,漸近展開項にあらわれる係数を記述するために高次相関関数の概念を定義した.更に通常の相関関数が指数減衰をもつことと,対応する力学系の混合の早さには密接な関係があるが,上記の問題に派生して高次相関関数の指数減衰性を調べ,アノソフ微分同相の場合と,ある種の条件を満たすアノソフ流に関して高次相関関数の指数減衰性を示した.

We have studied metric properties of Teichmuller space of 2 dimensional hyperbolic orbifolds and related subjects on discontinuous groups and 2 and 3 dimensional orbifolds. We obtained the following results : 1. Description of Teichmuller space of hyperbolic cone surfaces as a real algebraic space by using the distances between cone points and horocycles and its applications to the problem of finding the minimal number of geodesic length functions needed for a global parametrization of a Teichmuller space, the representation of mapping class groups and holomorphic families of Riemann surfaces. 2. Geodesic length functions related to suitably chosen closed curves on the underlying surface of a cone surface supply a global coordinate-system on the Teichmuller space. We expressed the 2 form which is defined analogously to Wolpert's formula of Weil-Petersson 2-form in terms of these geodesic length functions and calculated the volumes of some moduli spaces. 3. Classification of all non-cocompact arithmetic. Fuchsian groups of signature (0 ; theta_1, theta_2, theta_3, theta_4).

Shin Nayatani considered the action of a discrete transformation group of a rank one symmetric space on its boundary at infinity, and studied a canonical invariant metric defined on the domain of discontinuity. In particular, he applied it to the study of the topology of the quotient manifold when the symmetric space is complex hyperbolic space, and also formulated the quaternionic analogue of CR structure/geometry, applying it to the study of the canonical metric in the quatenionic case. He also investigated geometric structures on the Furstenberg boundaries of some higher rank symmetric spaces. Kazuo Akutagawa studied harmonic maps from hyperbolic space to a certain incomplete, negatively curved Riemannian manifold. In particular, he obtained results on the existence, uniqueness and regularity of solutions for the boundary value problem. He also made fundamental research on minimal maps between Riemannian manifolds, and obtained results on the existence and representation of minimal diffeomorphisms between hyperbolic disks. Hiroyasu Izeki proved a vanishing theorem for the cohomology of flat Hilbert space bundles over a conformally flat manifold, obtained as the quotient of a spherical domain by a Kleinian group, and applied it to the study of the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set. Yasuhiro Nakagawa investigated the Bando-Calabi-Futaki character, a generalization of the Futaki character. He extended Futaki-Morita's result that interpreted the Futaki character as a Godbillon-Vey invariant, to the case of the Bando-Calabi-Futaki character. Seiki Nishikawa studied the boundary value problem for hamonic maps between homogenious Riemannian manifolds of negative curvature. In particular, he obtained results on the necessary condition which the boundary value should satisfy, the uniqueness of solution and the existence of solution for a suitable boundary value, in the case of the Carnot spaces. Shigetoshi Bando studied the existence problem for Einstein metrics on Kahler manifolds and holomorphic vector bundles as well as its relation to the stability and degeneration phenomenon. He also investigated singular geometric structures which appeared as the limit of degeneration.

研究代表者・納谷信は、研究分担者・井関裕靖と共同で、組合せ調和写像の超剛性・固定点定理への応用について研究を行った。昨年度、単体複体からCAT(0)空間への離散群作用について同変な写像が,エネルギー汎関数の勾配流に沿って定値写像に収束するための十分条件を与え、一般的な固定点定理を得ていた。Takhtajan-Teoにより、普遍タイヒミュラー空間の連結成分が非正曲率ヒルベルト多様体の構造をもつことが示されており、したがってCAT(0)空間になる。この連結成分に昨年度証明した固定点定理を適用することにより、あるクラスの離散群のS^1の微分同相群への表現の像が有限群になるという事実の調和写像の方法による別証明を与えた。また、昨年度までに導入していたCAT(0)空間の幾何学的不変量が、空間の超極限をとった際にどのように振る舞うかを明らかにした。 金井雅彦は、葉層化多様体の接コホモロジーの消滅について研究を行い,応用として、階数γ【greater than or equal】2の半単純リー群の一様格子から標準的な仕方で構成されるR^γのアノソフ作用の無限小剛性を証明した。

We studied on Spin^c Analysis for Group C^*-bundles on Manifolds and Yamabe Invariants. More precisely, we studied on the fundamentals of C^*-algebras and their K-theory. We also studied on the synthetic research of Yamabe invariants and Bordism theory with supergroups (i.e., supergroups, supergroup-structures on manifolds, supergroup C^*-bunbles and others). In particular, by using this bordism theory with supergroups, we obtained an obstruction to the positivity of relative Yamabe invariants. This result is written in the following paper : Kazuo Akutagawa, An obstruction to the positivity of relative Yamabe invariants. The head investigator, Kazuo Akutagawa also studied with professor Boris Botvinnik (University of Oregon) on Yamabe invariants from the algebraic topological viewpoint. Similar to the Homology theory, we defined a natural relative version of the Yamabe invariant, that is, the "relative Yamabe invariant", and we studied on it and the relation of the Yamabe invariant of a double manifold. This result is also written in the following papers : Kazuo Akutagawa and Boris Botvinnik, Relative Yamabe invariant. Kazuo Akutagawa and Boris Botvinnik, Manifolds of positive scalar curvature and conformal cobordism theory.

多様体上の平坦な共形構造の空間を調べるのがこの研究の目的であった。多様体がコンパクトであれば、この空間上にはTeichmuller距離を高次元に拡張したものが定義でき、これが完備になることは以前に証明している.この距離の挙動を調べるのが第一の目標であったわけだが、そのためには、平坦な共形構造の空間(Teichmuller空間)をいくらかでも扱いやすい空間の部分集合として実現できれば非常に良い.このことについて、コンパクトなn次元多様体Mの基本群のコホモロジー次元がnより小さく、かつ展開写像が単射的であるような平坦な共形構造を許容する場合に結果を得た:この様な条件を満たすMのTeichmuller空間をある同値関係で割って得られる空間のある連結成分は、Mの基本群のSO(n+1,1)への表現空間に埋め込むことができ、その像はconvex cocompactなKlein群のなす集合の連結成分になっている.この埋め込みにより、Mの平坦な共形構造に、対応するKlein群の臨界指数を対応させる写像が定義できる。この写像は、Teichmuller空間上の汎関数であり、前述のTeichmuller距離に関して一様連続になっている.Klein群の臨界指数は対応する平坦な共形構造のある代表元のスカラー曲率と密接な関連があることが知られているので、これは、Teichmuller距離に関して、曲率に関連した汎関数が非常に良い挙動をすることを意味している。このことの直接の帰結として、convex cocompactなKlein群の擬等角安定性と極限集合のHausdorff次元がKlein群の変形に対して連続に動くことがわかる. 上述の汎関数の極値をとる共形構造は一般には退化しているが、その退化の様子も含めて多様体の位相構造についての多くの情報を持っていることが期待される.発表された論文“Limit sets of Kleinian groups and conformally flat Riemannian manifolds"には、退化せずに極値をとる共形構造について、Klein群の視点から論じてある。

準備中の論文"The Teichmuller distance on the space of flat conformal structures"において、コンパクト多様体上の平坦な共形構造の空間(正確には、平坦な共形構造のTeichmuller空間)に擬等角写像を用いて自然に定義される擬距離が、完備な距離(以下Teichmuller距離と呼ぶ)になっていることを示した。この距離は、古典的な、Riemann面のTeichmuller空間上のTeichmuller距離の高次元化になっており、コンパクト多様体上の平坦な共形構造のTeichmuller空間の構造を定量的に調べるための有効な手段になることが期待される。 一方で、ある条件を満たす、コンパクトで共形的に平坦な多様体のTeichmuller空間のある連結成分は、Klein群の変形空間に埋め込めることも証明できた。これを通して、共形的に平坦な多様体の連結和に関する素分解とそれによる平坦な共形構造の変形をKlein群の自由積への分解と対応させることができる。また、この場合には、共形的に平坦な多様体の曲率と密接な関連を持つKlein群の臨界指数が、上述のTeichmuller距離に関して良い挙動を示すことも確かめられた。さらに、投稿中の論文"Limit sets of Klinian groups and conformally flat Riemannian manifolds"において、ある種のKlein群の剛性に関する予想が肯定的に解決された。このことの応用として、リッチ曲率が負であるような共形的に平坦な計量を許容しない3次元Klein多様体を分類することができた。
