We Keio University have proposed and demonstrated a low-loss, high-bandwidth graded-index polymer optical fiber (GI POF). Recently, it has become clear that the perfluorinated (PF) polymer base POF has the possibility of achieving higher bit rate rather than silica optical fiber. The high bandwidth characteristics of the PF polymer base GI POF were quantitatively analyzed by experimentally confirming that the material dispersion of the PF polymer is lower than these of silica and other polymer materials. Campus LAN using of the PF polymer base GI POF has been actually demonstrated at Keio University and great advantages of using GI POF in high-bandwidth, handling, installation, and total system cost have been realized. Forthcoming, high-speed POF networks will be proposed and discussed in my talk.

Recent status of polymer optical fiber (POF) for high speed data communication is reviewed. In this paper, two types of graded-index (GI) POFs, i.e. PMMA-base GI POF and perfluorinated (PF) polymer base GI POF, are described. The PMMA base GI POF is expected as the media of home networking based on IEEE 1394 S400 for up to 100m distance. On the other hand, the PF polymer based GI POF has the possibility of achieving the highest bit rate among existing physical media including even silica fiber, since the material dispersion of silica and other polymer materials. Therefore, more than 10Gb/s bit rate transmission such as 10giga Ethernet can be achieved by the POF polymer base GI POF with using any wavelength from visible to 1.3µｍ wavelength region.

GI型POF中に形成される屈折率傾斜に関してその形成方法の現状と、傾斜機能材料としてとらえたGI型POFの優れた光学特性である低材料分散性について、PFポリマー系GI型POFを例にして報告した。

This paper describes the potential bandwidth achieved by the graded-index polymer optical fiber (GI POF). Modal dispersion should be minimized to realize the high-speed data transmission in multimode type GI POF. On the other hand, when, the refractive index profile is optimized to reduce the modal dispersion, another factors such as material, profile dispersion, mode coupling, and differential mode attenuation come to affect the bandwidth characteristic. In this paper, the maximum bandwidth of the GI POF is clarified by considering of fiber material and also described.

既存の石英系光ファイバの通信速度を超える高速通信を可能にするGI型POFの作製方法とその伝送特性、長期信頼性に関して報告した。

光と高分子物質の相互作用という視点の下に原子レベルからマクロな不均一構造に至るまで光学ポリマーにおける光作用の基礎原理とその応用につき紹介する。

GI型POFの損失特性、帯域特性に関する現状と、さらに全フッ素化ポリマー系GI型POFを実際にLANに導入した慶應義塾大学理工学部ITCやＫ２タウンキャンパスの例について報告した。

A lot of research interests are focused on the introduction of optical fiber even in the access network because of the growing demand for accessing Internet with high bit rate. Since inexpensive total system cost is strong]y required for LAN or access network, we have proposed a large-core, low-loss and high-bandwidth graded-index polymer optical fiber (GI POF) as a promising candidate of physical media. In this paper, we describe the recent development of the GI POF in its attenuation and bandwidth achieved by investigating a new polymer material and by theoretical analysis.

We report on the lasing action of the GI POF containing dyes, such as Rhodamine B, Rhodamine 6G, Perylene Orange, and Pyrromethene 567. These dyes have been incorporate into poly (methyl methacrylate-co-2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate). These fibers were transversely pumped at 532 nm with a frequency-doubled Q-switching ND: YAG laser. Slope efficiency of 24% and output of 1,3 mJ were obtained with a Rhodamine 6G-doped fiber. A Lifetime of 200,000 pluses at 10 Hz was achieved with a Rhodamine B-doped fiber. GI POF containing a Nd-chelate have also been fabricated. The absorption spectrum of the fiber exhibited several strong bands in the visible and infrared region. We have observed infrared fluorescence (0.90, 1.60, and 1.3µm) of the Nd3+ ion of the fiber at room temperature when it was pumped with an Ar+ -pumped dye laser at 580 nm. The Judd-Often theory was applied to the absorption spectrum of Nd+ in polymer to determine the Judd-Ofelt parameters. From the theory, various radiative properties, such as transition probability, branching ratio, and emission cross section for various emission levels, have been determined and reported.

We encapsulated rare earth ions such as europium and neodymium with organic ligands to in corporate them into polymer materials. Their spectroscopic properties in polymer hosts and organic solutions were studied. Infrared emission has been observed from a neodymium-doped perdeuterated core GI POF.

通信メディアとして使用しているGI-POFは石英系、光ファイバーの50倍以上の大口径化が可能であり、さらに機械的な曲げにも強いことから、家庭用やオフィス内などの利用に適したメディアであると考えられる。更に、近年低損失全フッ素化(PF)ポリマー材料を用いたGI-POFが開発され、既に上梓されている。現在LANのイーサネット規格として石英系GI型マルチモード(MMF)が広く用いられているがPFポリマー系GI-POFは、信号波長に関してこのMMFとの互換性を有しながらさらに石英系MMFよりも高速通信が可能となることが理論的に解明された。本講演では、GI-POFの高速ホームネットワーク、LANへの応用展開について述べる。

微粒子のような「異物」を添加して材料に機能を付与するという手法は、現在では大きな抵抗無く受け入れられる手法と考えられるが、フォトニクスの分野においては非常識な手法と理解されていた。我々が提供し、実用化してきたフォトニクスポリマーについて紹介する。

情報技術の骨格をなしている、情報ネットワーク技術、情報表示技術及び情報蓄積技術と関連させて本プロジェクトで研究を概略的に紹介している。

フッ素化ポリマー系ＧＩ型ＰＯＦの低材料分散特性について、またその特性によって全フッ素化ポリマー系ＧＩ型ＰＯＦが、石英系マルチモード光ファイバーの伝送速度を超え、更に広い波長範囲で高速通信を可能にする点について報告した。液晶ディスプレイバックライトの導光板として用いられているＨＳＯＴについてその性能及び散乱特性について報告を行った。
