In the 21st century, the progress of artificial intelligence has attracted attention, and its practical application has begun in various fields.

While expectations are rising, there is also a gap between expectations and actual practical use. In this seminar, we will lecture on the application of AI/Data Science to the medical and healthcare fields, targeting not only students involved in medical sciences and healthcare but also students with a broad interest in this field.

Through the seminar, we aim to help participants correctly understand how AI technology is used in the medical field and become individuals who can think about the future application of AI technology in the medical field.

*This seminar is a set of three sessions, and it is recommended that you attend all three sessions if possible.

Additionally, the seminar will be held in person to provide opportunities for dialogue with students and to deepen understanding.

Session 1: 5/20 (Mon) 6th period (18:15–19:45)

We will provide an overview of the definition of AI, its historical background, and the information processing that supports AI.

We will introduce the latest status of AI based on the history of its progress. It is currently referred to as the third boom

but even newer technologies are being researched and developed, and their progress is moving at a tremendous pace. ChatGPT is being closely watched as a hot topic. While research and application in the healthcare and medical fields are progressing, we will first learn the basics of AI to consider its applications.

Session 2: 5/27 (Mon) 6th period (18:15–19:45)

We will learn about the application of AI to medical imaging and the potential application of natural language processing technology to medical care.

With the progress of deep learning, its application to the medical field as a form of image processing technology is accelerating. In diagnostic imaging using X-rays, CT, MRI, etc., reports have shown AI exceeding the capabilities of doctors and technicians, and practical application has begun. We will look at the characteristics and prospects for future progress. Knowledge related to healthcare and medicine is accumulated as vast amounts of data, such as academic literature, papers, and medical records (electronic health records, etc.). The volume of this data is beginning to exceed human capacity, and by utilizing natural language processing technology here, various types of support become possible.

Session 3: 6/3 (Mon) 6th period (18:15–19:45)

We will provide an overview of the legal and ethical aspects of applying AI to medical sciences.

Due to its nature, the application of AI to the healthcare and medical fields requires various legal and ethical exami-

nations. On the other hand, the evolution and progress of AI technology is much faster than the progress of those examinations, and legal and ethical aspects are sometimes seen as a hindrance. Here, we will look at what issues are arising and how we should think about future progress. Furthermore, AI technology is an indispensable technology for aiming for DX in healthcare and medicine in the future. Various possibilities lie ahead, such as telemedicine, new diagnostic support, new services through collaboration with other industries, support for staff in nursing care and healthcare, and guide support leading to preventive medicine and behavioral change. We will provide an overview of these prospects.
