The 2024 Law Lecture Series "Changing Families and Real Estate: Future Prospects for a Depopulating and Aging Society" (3 sessions in total) will be held on Saturday, January 25, Sunday, February 23, and Saturday, March 29, 2025.

As Japanese society experiences unprecedented population decline and aging, there is an increasing number of land and buildings that owners can no longer manage. Some of these have become owner-unknown, making management and utilization difficult.

To address and prevent such situations, the Civil Code and the Real Property Registration Act have been amended, and the Act on Land Escheat to the National Treasury has been enacted, with much attention on their implementation. Meanwhile, the transformation of Japanese society has extended to the regulation of the most fundamental human relationships—marriage, divorce, and parent-child relations. Amendments to the Civil Code have also been made regarding the review of the presumption of legitimacy, the abolition of the remarriage prohibition period, the introduction of joint custody for parents after divorce, and the securing of child support.

Through legal reforms concerning family and real estate—matters most familiar to us—we would like to consider how we can envision the future state of Japanese society.
