A research group led by Professor Hideo Akabayashi of the Faculty of Economics at Keio University has authored two international collaborative research papers on family background and educational outcomes. These papers use data on children of a wide range of ages from three countries—Japan, China, and the United States—including the Japan Child Panel Survey, which was created and is provided by Keio University. Specifically, the group conducted research on family background and children's study time and academic achievement (the study time paper), and research on gender differences in children's academic achievement and educational investment according to family background (the gender differences paper).

This research revealed that the impact of family background, such as parents' educational attainment and income, on children's study time varies across countries, and that gender differences are observed in academic achievement and preferences (liking) for each subject.

These findings were published in the online edition of the academic journal Chinese Journal of Sociology.
