Extremely Low Birth Weight Infant Born at 289 Grams Turns 20: Japan's Smallest Surviving Extremely Low Birth Weight Infant to Reach Adulthood

In June 2019, a girl who was born at Keio University Hospital in 1999 with an extremely low birth weight of 289 grams at 23 weeks gestation, and was later discharged from the hospital's neonatal ward in the Department of Pediatrics, turned 20 years old.

At the time of her birth, she was the third smallest baby in the world. She now holds the record for the smallest birth weight among Japanese individuals to have reached adulthood.
