A group from the Keio University Faculty of Science and Technology, including Professor Tomoaki Ohtsuki and Project Assistant Professor Kentaro Toyoda, has developed a prototype of a Product Ownership Management System (POMS). By applying blockchain technology, used in cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, this system can detect counterfeit products even after they have reached consumers.

The newly developed ownership management system manages the history of owners on the blockchain from the time a product is manufactured. This prevents counterfeit products from entering the market and allows consumers to verify whether a product is genuine.

The results of this research were published on June 28 in the academic journal IEEE Access under the title “A Novel Blockchain-Based Product Ownership Management System (POMS) for Anti-Counterfeits in The Post Supply Chain” (DOI: 10.1109/ACCESS.2017.2720760).
