Training Program at the University of Utah (Recruitment Currently Closed)
Purpose
In cutting-edge research fields, faculty and students alike play a role in research, guided by the spirit of "learning while teaching, teaching while learning," where they teach and learn from one another. Consequently, it is essential for students to gain international experience. This program aims to cultivate the critical awareness and flexible thinking required of global leaders by enabling students to interact with world-renowned pioneers in the medical field. Such opportunities, which are not available through domestic student life alone, are invaluable for their development.
Rationale
At the University of Utah, collaboration and interdisciplinary research are actively pursued among Faculty of Pharmacy, School of Medicine, and the School of Engineering. The research experience there will contribute to developing personnel at Keio University University who can advance cutting-edge medical and regenerative therapies through collaboration among School of Medicine, Faculty of Science and Technology, and Faculty of Pharmacy. Moreover, the University of Utah is an institution boasting world-class research achievements, particularly in the life sciences. It also has strong ties with our faculty, with faculty members like Professor Grainger having experience as Guest Professor (Global). At this trusted educational and research institution, renowned for both its accomplishments and instructional leadership, participants will visit laboratories in the schools of pharmacy, medicine, and engineering to engage in discussions and exchanges with leading researchers. They will also visit biotech ventures to gain insights into commercialization.

4th-year students in Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences of Faculty of Pharmacy; 4th- to 6th-year students in Department of Pharmacy; 4th- to 6th-year students in School of Medicine; 4th-year students in Faculty of Science and Technology; and graduate students in Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Graduate School of Medicine, and Graduate School of Science and Technology at Keio University University.

Program Activities
Before the trip, participants will attend lectures on topics such as language and presentation skills and participate in a program designed to deepen their knowledge of interdisciplinary research. In August, they will travel to the United States for a 10-day training period at the University of Utah and other institutions. A reporting session on the outcomes of this training will be held on campus in December.
Program Timeline
The application deadline and the announcement of participants are in May. The Utah training program is held in August, and the reporting session is in November.
Costs
The total cost is approximately 300,000 JPY, which includes airfare, accommodation, the ESTA fee, overseas travel insurance, and other expenses. Subsidies are available from the Future Leadership Fund.
Selection Process
As a general rule, applicants are required to have a TOEIC score of 650 or higher, or equivalent English proficiency. The required application documents are the application form, a TOEIC Official Score Certificate, a copy of the most recent academic transcript, and a statement of purpose. The initial screening is based on these documents, followed by an interview for the second screening.
