Nurturing Pharmacists as Leaders in Healthcare
Keio University’s Unique Strength: Collaboration with the University Hospital
The Faculty of Pharmacy and Keio University Hospital’s Department of Pharmacy maintain strong collaborative relationships in education, research and pharmacy department operations.
One means of achieving this is human resources exchanges. The Director of the hospital’s Department of Pharmacy and the Director of the University Community Pharmacy serve concurrently as faculty members of the Faculty of Pharmacy and pharmacists employed there are involved in the educational activities of the Faculty of Pharmacy.
In this situation, the hospital’s Department of Pharmacy accepts pharmacy students for early experiential training and hospital practical training.
Furthermore, in October 2021, the Hospital Pharmacy Course, a joint program between the School of Medicine and the Faculty of Pharmacy,
was established, with Professor Hisakazu Ohtani of the Faculty of Pharmacy appointed as course director.
A key objective of this program is to cultivate Pharmacist-Scientists who play a vital role in advanced medical care.
Advanced Pharmacy Environment
The University Community Pharmacy of the Faculty of Pharmacy was established in 2001 as Japan’s first university-based pharmacy. Furthermore, from April 1 2020, it became a Health Support Pharmacy, contributing to maintaining and promoting the health of local residents as their neighborhood pharmacy. It also serves as an educational facility. During the in-house training conducted in the third or fourth year prior to practical training, all students provide medication guidance to simulated patients at the pharmacy counter. Students undergoing practical training also experience advanced pharmacy practice by using the latest equipment in the dispensing room, such as the new tablet packaging machines and fully-automated verification system.
Inter-Professional Education Program Centered on the Patient Where Group-based Healthcare Is Practiced
This is a joint educational program spanning the School of Medicine, the Faculty of Nursing and Medical Care, and the Faculty of Pharmacy (Department of Pharmacy) to foster individuals capable of contributing to team-based healthcare at an early stage. Under the theme “Patient-centered healthcare through a group approach,” students engage in group discussions on a common theme for each year group, deepening their interactions while respecting each other’s perspectives. How should healthcare professionals collaborate to provide high-quality patient-centered healthcare? This is a program for learning that in practice.
