Cryptocurrency Research Project Holds Its Second Lecture

On Friday, April 30, 2021, the second session, "The Future of Payments Created by Digital Currencies: The Present and Future of CBDCs, Privately Issued Digital Currencies, and Stablecoins," was held online. This time, we invited the chairman of the Digital Currency Forum, which consists of major Japanese companies and megabanks, to give a lecture on the basic concepts of digital currencies and the differences between "central bank digital currencies" and "privately issued digital currencies."

  • Mr. Hiromi Yamaoka (Director, Future Corporation; Director, Future Institute of Economic and Financial Research; Attorney at Law in New York State; Chairman of the Digital Currency Forum; Tokyo International Financial Fellow)

First, Professor Jiro Tamura (Professor, Faculty of Law) gave the opening remarks, explaining the significance of the Cryptocurrency Research Project and introducing Mr. Yamaoka. Next, Mr. Yamaoka explained (1) the division of roles between the private and public sectors in payment infrastructure, and (2) the potential contributions of digital currencies to the digital transformation of the Japanese economy. Finally, a Q&A session was held to answer questions from the audience.

This project aims to deepen the understanding of the potential that cryptocurrencies can bring to society and promote the development of the cryptocurrency industry by providing opportunities to hear directly from practitioners with deep knowledge of cryptocurrencies as guest speakers. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all who participated.
