On the afternoon of March 6, a public seminar was held at the East-West Center in Washington (the headquarters of the East-West Center is in Honolulu, Hawaii), featuring the following three panelists.
・Yoshihide Soeya: Professor, Faculty of Law
・Junya Nishino: Professor, Faculty of Law
・Toshihiro Nakayama: Professor, Faculty of Policy Management
In the opening oral presentations, Professor Soeya discussed the "Indo-Pacific Strategy," a focus of attention between Japan and the U.S., with the main themes being Japan-U.S. relations and the Asia-Pacific situation. Professor Nakayama reported on Japan's reactions to the Trump administration to date and future prospects. Finally, Professor Nishino provided an analysis of the recent situation on the Korean Peninsula. While the primary focus was on the military and security aspects of the Japan-U.S. relationship, the overall discussion covered an extremely broad range of areas, including the domestic political situations, economic relations, and history of the countries involved.
Afterward, Dr. Ellen Frost of the East-West Center in Washington, serving as chair and discussant, posed individual questions to each speaker, followed by their responses. Finally, a Q&A session of nearly an hour was held between the speakers and the participants, who filled the room to near capacity. The discussion was also streamed live over the internet.
On the following day, March 7, a seminar for graduate students was also held, featuring research presentations by four graduate students, followed by comments from researchers at the East-West Center in Washington and external guest researchers.
It was decided to consider continuing similar activities in the next fiscal year and beyond.
