On the afternoon of March 6, Toshihiro Nakayama (Professor, Faculty of Policy Management) and Michito Tsuruoka (Associate Professor, Faculty of Policy Management) visited the Atlantic Council.
Professor Nakayama gave a presentation on Japan-U.S. relations from the era of the Democratic Party of Japan's administration to the current Donald Trump administration. Associate Professor Tsuruoka presented a comparison of Europe and Asia in their relations with Russia, China, and the United States, highlighting common challenges and differences.
Afterward, cybersecurity was also discussed, and both sides acknowledged the need for intelligence cooperation between Japan and the United States. Furthermore, they shared a common understanding that the Japan-U.S. alliance should cooperate not only with regard to China but also across the wider Indo-Pacific region.
They also exchanged views on relations with Russia and discussed the strategic intentions of China's Belt and Road Initiative, China's authoritarian regime, and China's AI strategy.
They agreed to arrange similar opportunities for exchanging views in the future.
