In Memoriam: Richard L. Armitage (1945 - 2025)
We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Ambassador Richard L. Armitage, former Deputy Secretary of State of the United States and Honorary Doctor of Keio University.
Ambassador Armitage was a dedicated mentor to many graduate students in the Armitage Memorial Educational Program at Keio University's Global Research Institute.
He listened with enthusiasm to every graduate student's presentation, no matter what their academic theme or specialty, always offering thoughtful advice and warm encouragement. He impressed us time and time again as he drew on his vast experience to speak not only about Japan-U.S. relations but also about broader dynamics throughout Asia and the Middle East. The graduate students he supported have since gone on to have thriving careers in academia, business, and beyond.
We are deeply grateful for his guidance and commitment since he started the program in 2017. The faculty and graduate students involved in the Armitage Program offer our heartfelt prayers for his peaceful rest.
