Since 2022, Keio University has been holding the Keio University SDGs Conference (hereinafter, Jukusei Kaigi), where Keio students engage in discussions and planning related to the SDGs. Every December, final proposals summarizing these activities are submitted. Proposals selected through a screening process are developed into various activities aimed at implementation as "Jukusei Kaigi Projects" led by the students. The Office for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion provides support as the secretariat for these projects. This report covers the following activities from among these projects.

2024 Jukusei Kaigi Project: Morooka Elementary School x Jukusei Kaigi PJ - Exploratory Activity Implementation Report

From May to December 2024, a collaboration between Yokohama Municipal Morooka Elementary School and the Jukusei Kaigi Project "Interaction between Keio Students and the Town of Hiyoshi"* was conducted to carry out exploratory activities. In these activities, sixth-grade class 3 of Morooka Elementary School and Keio students deepened their learning together under the theme "Let's Practice the Morooka Elementary School Version of the SDGs!"

*The Jukusei Kaigi Project "Interaction between Keio Students and the Town of Hiyoshi" was launched after a proposal from the Keio University SDGs Conference - 2022 Jukusei Kaigi was adopted. This project holds "University Student Book Caravans" and "exploratory activities" at elementary schools around Hiyoshi. The concept of the activity is to transform "Keio University, so close yet so far," into "Keio University, the pride of the town."

Purpose of Implementation

By having the Jukusei Kaigi involved in the integrated studies at Morooka Elementary School, we aim to extend the promotion of the SDGs beyond Keio University to the surrounding campus community. We also want elementary school students to see Keio University as a more familiar presence.

Introduction to Campus SDGs

日吉キャンパスの近くに住む小学生が慶應義塾をもっと身近に感じ、「街の誇りの慶應義塾大学」にするために、これからもこの塾生会議プロジェクトは活動を続けていきます。

As an introduction to the exploratory activities, we introduced Keio University's SDG initiatives to the elementary school students who had been studying "Community x SDGs." This provided them with an opportunity to learn what the university is doing to achieve the SDGs and to think about what they can do at Morooka Elementary School.

September 24: Setting Class and Individual Goals

The activity was conducted with the goal of deciding "what we want to do through the exploratory activities." The elementary school students shared what they had thought about after the previous collaborative class, and the university students provided feedback. Based on this advice, they held group discussions to materialize their ideas and consider the process of putting them into action. One university student joined each group, leading to more heated discussions. As a result of the discussions, they decided to divide into three groups to work on illuminations, karuta cards, and posters.

November 26: Group Work Divided by Fields of Interest

In each group (illuminations, karuta, posters), the elementary school students reported their progress since the last session to the university students. Afterward, they set goals for December. The university students provided information that would be helpful to the elementary school students, such as how to create easy-to-read posters.

December 13: Hiyoshi Campus Tour and Group Work

The "Hiyoshi Campus Tour," which had not been possible due to safety and other reasons, was conducted using photos and videos. In addition to learning about Keio University's campus SDGs, the students were able to get a feel for the university's atmosphere.

In the group work, they considered the possibility of a Morooka Elementary School x Jukusei Kaigi collaborative project, and created illuminations and a collaborative poster.

December 24: Results Presentation

Each group presented what they learned and achieved over the five exploratory activity sessions. Everyone reviewed the content of the completed illuminations, karuta cards, and posters.

Deliverables: Illuminations

Using materials collected from an SDG perspective, such as reusing plastic bottles and light sources from art class, they created illuminations that many people could enjoy. They colored the plastic bottles to match the SDG goals and wrote individual messages on them. Later, the illuminations were displayed in conjunction with an event held by the Jukusei Kaigi "Energy Saving Project" at the Hiyoshi Pavilion in the courtyard.

Karuta Cards

With the desire to convey the SDG goals and targets to the younger generation in an easy-to-understand way, they created karuta cards that allow learning about the SDGs while playing. They also created a proposal to hold a karuta tournament for third-grade elementary school students. They made special efforts, such as adding furigana (phonetic readings), keeping in mind that younger students would be using them.

Posters

They created posters to call for action toward achieving the SDGs. They put up the posters with questionnaires in the hallways and classrooms of Morooka Elementary School, reaching out to the students while measuring the effects. They also created a poster to be displayed at Keio University. The university students processed the posters created by the elementary school students into an Instagram-style format to create a collaborative poster (see photo below).

Participant Feedback

From the Elementary School Students

Through the exploratory activities, I learned about the SDGs and became more conscious of them in my daily life than ever before.

With advice from the university students, I was able to create a web page to help people learn about the SDGs.

From the University Students

Seeing the simple and energetic elementary school students was also stimulating for us university students.

It had been a long time since I'd been back to an elementary school, and it made me very nostalgic.

In Conclusion

I believe the best part of these exploratory activities was that the teachers, elementary school students, and university students were all able to engage with an attitude of learning together. Although there were many things that didn't go well due to time constraints and lack of resources, we cooperated and put the Morooka Elementary School version of the SDGs into practice. I hope that for the students of class 6-3, the presence of the university students has become more familiar.

This Jukusei Kaigi Project will continue its activities so that elementary school students living near the Hiyoshi Campus can feel closer to Keio University and help make it "Keio University, the pride of the town."
