On November 15, President Yasushi Asari and Vice-President Akiyoshi Takahashi of The Kitasato Institute visited Keio University President Kohei Itoh to exchange views. From Keio University, Vice-President Yuko Kitagawa and Vice-President Eishi Okada also attended the meeting to discuss the cooperative relationship between the two institutions.
There was a deep friendship between Yukichi Fukuzawa, the founder of Keio University, and Dr. Shibasaburo Kitasato, the founder of The Kitasato Institute. Dr. Kitasato was appointed as the head of the newly established Department of Medicine (later the Dean of the School of Medicine) on the occasion of Keio University's 60th anniversary and also served as the first hospital director.
The Kitasato Memorial Medical Library, built in 1937 and named after Dr. Kitasato, is still widely used today on the Shinanomachi Campus, where the School of Medicine is located. In addition, the School of Medicine and the Sanshikai (the School of Medicine alumni association) hold the annual "Kitasato Commemoration Ceremony" to honor the great achievements of Dr. Shibasaburo Kitasato, the first Dean of the School of Medicine and hospital director.
