On Thursday, April 22, Keio University signed a cooperation agreement with Nakatsu City, Oita Prefecture, to mutually cooperate in the fields of culture, education, and academia.
The agreement signing ceremony was held at Keio University's Mita Campus. Attendees included President Akira Haseyama, Vice-President Naoki Watanabe, and Director of the Fukuzawa Memorial Center for Modern Japanese Studies Takashi Hirano from Keio University, as well as Mayor Masanori Okutsuka, Superintendent of Education Hidetoyo Awata, and Director of the General Policy Division Chika Setoguchi from Nakatsu City.
Keio University and Nakatsu City have been promoting mutual cooperation based on the "Agreement on Mutual Cooperation between Nakatsu City and Keio University" signed on April 20, 2008, sharing the spirit of jitsugaku (science) as advocated by Yukichi Fukuzawa in the first edition of "Gakumon no susume (An Encouragement of Learning)."
Following the opening of the Shin-Nakatsu Shigakko in August 2019, a joint research institution of Keio University and Nakatsu City that also serves as a learning and exchange facility for citizens ( "Opening of the 'Shin-Nakatsu Shigakko' with Ties to Fukuzawa" ), this new cooperation agreement aims to further promote joint research, learning exchanges, and citizen participation. This will be achieved by cooperating in the fields of culture, education, and academia, in addition to the human resource development and community building that have been carried out to date.
