As part of the Keio University Ishii-Ishibashi Fund for Education and Research Development, Keio University offers the Keio University Global Fellowship (Study Abroad Grant for Privately Financed Students). This is a scheme whereby the university provides aid to students who completed an undergraduate or graduate degree at Keio University in order to allow them to study and obtain a degree at an overseas graduate school.
The selection criteria for the fellowship include reasons for going overseas, study and/or research plan, and academic records. Students selected as Keio University Global Fellows receive up to 5,000,000 yen in financial aid for the costs incurred from studying abroad including tuition and living expenses. The purpose of this fellowship is to foster an even greater number of individuals who play an active role in the global arena with a focus on Keio's transdisciplinary initiatives (Longevity, Security, and Creativity), which are at the core of the Top Global University Project, by supporting accomplished students who are rising to the challenge of studying at an overseas graduate school.
Reports from the Keio University Global Fellows 2020 can be found below.
Akira Okumura
Completed a master's program at the Graduate School of Science and Technology (March 2020)
Studies at: RWTH Aachen University (Germany)
I am a Ph.D. student at RWTH Aachen University in Germany studying inorganic chemistry. I am particularly interested in the synthesis of new metal complexes to activate small molecules such as carbon dioxide and nitrogen, and I conduct experiments almost every day. I am surrounded by students and post-docs from many other countries giving so many opportunities for interactions and discussion.
RWTH Aachen University is a partner university of Keio University and there has been active exchange for over 60 years.
Unfortunately, there have been many restrictions on our daily lives this semester due to the coronavirus and the resulting lockdowns. Although this sometimes made me feel anxious, thanks to this scholarship I do not have to stress about my finances and am able to concentrate on my research. I am deeply grateful for the Keio University Global Fellowship.
Ryo Kamoi
Graduate of the Faculty of Science and Technology (March 2020)
Studies at: The University of Texas, Austin (United States)
I am currently pursuing a master's degree in computer science at the University of Texas at Austin. My research focuses on natural language processing, with a particular focus on its application to academic texts. The University of Texas at Austin is one of the top universities in machine learning, giving me opportunities for discussions with many researchers and students studying natural language processing. I am currently taking research-oriented courses in machine learning and natural language processing. From the next year, I am going to put more focus on research for the thesis. Due to COVID-19, classes are still being offered remotely. I was taking classes from Japan for the Fall 2020 semester, but have been in Austin since the spring 2021 semester.
This scholarship has taken care of most of my tuition and living expenses, and I can concentrate on my studies without any financial worries. I am grateful for this precious opportunity.
Megumi Tanaka
Graduate of the Faculty of Science and Technology (March 2020)
Studies at: University of California, Berkeley (United States)
I am currently a Ph.D. student at UC Berkeley, where I am doing research in physical devices, with an emphasis on nanoelectronics and materials for developing future medical and memory devices. In order to achieve my goal of becoming a researcher who takes the lead not only in medical technologies but also in promoting STEM education for women and social equity in innovation, I am majoring in Device Physics and minoring in both Computer Science Education and New Media Studies. I feel immensely blessed every day to be in an environment where I can learn with and from the most creative and advanced students and faculty from all over the world.
Even with the COVID situation, I am able to live out my dream life as a healthy doctoral student without financial worries, and this would not have been possible without the support of this fellowship. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude.
Tatsuya Chiba
Graduate of the Faculty of Science and Technology (March 2020)
Studies at: Johns Hopkins University (United States)
I am in the Ph.D. program of chemistry at Johns Hopkins University. I am working on nanocluster anion with exotic electronic states with gas-phase experiments, which allows me to investigate chemical states without effects from surface or solvent molecules. All technology stands on science, and I am glad to be involved in fundamental research that is at the leading edge of chemistry. The lab environment is ideal for research, and I have diligent student colleagues from all over the world, and we also have mutual communication with other leading groups at Brown University and Columbia University.
I appreciate the support I have received from the Keio University Global Fellowship for enabling me to focus on studying and research without financial concerns, even in these difficult times with the coronavirus pandemic.
* Applications for the Keio University Global Fellowship (Study Abroad Grant for Privately Financed Students) from the Keio University Ishii-Ishibashi Fund for Education and Research Development for students planning to study abroad in the 2021 academic year have closed.
