On Tuesday, November 26, Keio University’s time-honored Mita Public Speaking Event was held at the Mita Public Speaking Hall (Mita Enzetsu-kan). For this, the 709th event, Professor Takao Takahashi of the Department of Pediatrics at the Keio University School of Medicine gave a lecture on the theme of "The Power of Genetics and Environment to Nurture Children."
Professor Takahashi began with an explanation of the power of genetics and environment as per the title of his lecture, stating that genetics constitutes scenarios meticulously mapped out in genes that protect us by virtue of remaining unaltered. Meanwhile, environment also strongly influences genetic elements through the acquisition of various hands-on experiences, with both genetics and environment indicated as being indispensable to human growth and development. He illustrated this point with specific examples in the form of clinical case studies and many accompanying episodes.
To conclude his lecture, Professor Takahashi spoke about his beliefs on the model pediatricians and indeed all adults should aspire to, with the message that while there is no such thing as perfect child rearing a diverse range of experiences will best serve this ongoing enterprise.
Many people gathered to listen, including Keio students, faculty and staff members, and persons with young children, with the venue filled to capacity. Professor Takahashi’s explanations were both thoroughgoing and humorous ensuring that an atmosphere of approachability reigned from start to finish. He also gave thoughtful answers to all questions fielded about children and child rearing during the Q&A session.
