  • Obstetrics and Gynecology (8 weeks)

  • Electives (up to 38 weeks)

*1 Regarding training in the emergency department, the following rules apply in principle.

・Of the 12 weeks of emergency medicine in the first year, 8 weeks will be spent in emergency medicine training, and 4 weeks will be spent in emergency department training within the department of anesthesiology.

*2 Regarding facilities for community medicine training

・Even in facilities specializing in specialized medical care (e.g., dermatology, neurosurgery, psychiatry, etc.), training content will be conducted that allows for the achievement of goals for general outpatient training. These are facilities where training can be conducted for general diseases in addition to community-based integrated care and surgical diseases.

・If general outpatient training cannot be fulfilled through community medicine training, adjustments will be made so that short-term general outpatient training (Internal Medicine (including General Medicine), Pediatrics, surgery, etc.) can be conducted at Keio University Hospital.

・During the community medicine training period, one to several days of home medical care training will be conducted during working hours (until 14:30) from Monday to Saturday.

*3 It is also possible to conduct pediatric training as neonatal emergency medicine in the NICU (prior consultation with the program director is required).

◆Only during the Obstetrics and Gynecology training period, it is possible to undergo night shift training in Obstetrics and Gynecology (prior consultation with the program director is required). However, the monthly number of night shift training units required for the residency is the sum of emergency medicine shifts and Obstetrics and Gynecology shifts. Obstetrics and Gynecology shifts are limited to a maximum of twice per month.

◆Departments that conduct general outpatient training include Internal Medicine (including General Medicine), Pediatrics (only at Keio University Hospital), surgery, and community medicine. (4 weeks or more)

◆The "Obstetrician and Gynecologist Training Program" is a program for those aiming to become obstetricians and gynecologists, but it is also permissible to proceed to other clinical departments after completing the clinical residency.

The significance of junior residency lies in rotating through departments other than Obstetrics and Gynecology

This program is, in principle, designed for those who aspire to become obstetricians and gynecologists.

The scope of clinical practice in obstetrics and gynecology is diverse. It has both medical and surgical aspects, ranging from pregnancy, childbirth, and fertility treatment to surgery for malignant tumors and chemotherapy. Therefore, collaboration with various related clinical departments is crucial.

In fact, rotating through such related clinical departments is even more important than obstetrics and gynecology itself, which is why we have set a long elective period.

Junior clinical residency is a great opportunity to see obstetrics and gynecology from the perspective of related clinical departments. Since the instructors also know your aspirations, you can expect guidance focused on "points you should know if you are going to become an obstetrician and gynecologist." This makes for a more efficient two years, so it is especially recommended for those who have already decided on their career path.

Furthermore, even if you do not choose obstetrics and gynecology as your final specialty and move to another department, there is the benefit of acquiring an obstetrical/gynecological perspective and the basics of treating women. Regardless of your specialty, we look forward to welcoming those who want to be an ally to women!
