When I first entered university, the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic prevented me from having the kind of student life I had envisioned. Amidst this, the thought, “Is it really okay to continue like this?” gradually grew, and in order to change my circumstances, I began to consider an exchange program.
The destination I chose for my study abroad was Western Michigan University in the United States. I primarily studied fields related to my major in Japan, but it was a daily struggle to keep up with the discussions conducted in English and the immense volume of assignments. Nevertheless, the specialized learning at my host university was incredibly valuable, and this experience prompted me to decide to pursue graduate school.
During my time abroad, I passed the tryouts and was able to join the basketball club team. When I first joined, I was confronted with a language barrier and an overwhelming difference in athletic ability. However, striving in the face of such adversity, both in language and in the sport, and seeing it through to the end allowed me to grow significantly. Above all, meeting wonderful teammates and spending so much time together is an irreplaceable and precious memory.
I had no experience abroad, no confidence in my English ability, and no particularly noble aspirations for studying overseas. Even so, experiencing numerous setbacks, earnestly confronting and accepting myself, and finding value in it all has become a great asset in my life. If any of you have even the slightest desire to study abroad, I encourage you to believe in yourself and give it your all.
