Sub-Majors

The Faculty of Law offers a sub-major system that allows students to pursue a “second field of specialization” in academic disciplines other than law and political science.

About Sub-majors

At the Faculty of Law, “Humanities Seminars” and “Natural Sciences Seminars” are offered in the third and fourth years, enabling students to continue and deepen their studies in the humanities and natural sciences undertaken in the first and second years. If a student achieves a defined level of academic accomplishment in a field studied systematically over four years, the student will be certified as having completed a sub-major and will be awarded a “Faculty of Law Sub-major Eligibility Certificate” upon graduation.

The sub-major certification system also encourages students to explore new fields of knowledge unhindered by existing academic disciplines. Students are not required to focus exclusively on a single field; for example, they may take seminars in both the humanities and natural sciences and write a thesis spanning both fields.

For further details, please refer to “About the Faculty of Law Sub-major Certification System” on the Keio University Student Website.
