A specialization in Asian History lets students conduct empirical research grounded in primary historical sources, with a focus on East Asian history centered on China and the history of the Middle Eastern Islamic world, encompassing the Arab world, Turkey, Iran, and Central Asia.

A specialization in Western History lets students examine the history of Europe and beyond from diverse perspectives, employing empirical methods to trace the development of society and culture.

A specialization in Archaeology and Ethnology lets students reconstruct the history of past societies and their cultural traditions using primary sources accumulated through fieldwork.

A specialization in Japanese Literature lets students pursue comprehensive and in-depth research into Japanese literature, language, and culture from ancient times to the present. The field is distinguished by philological approaches exemplified by the Institute of Oriental Classics (Shidō Bunko), while also encompassing diverse subjects and methods extending to painting, publishing culture, and theoretical analysis.
