Overview:

Philosophical thought concerning community has been passed down since Plato and Aristotle in ancient Greece, and its importance has only grown in modern times. Now may be the very time to discuss the community to come.

In this workshop, two presenters will examine the community "to come (à venir)," centering on the theory of democracy of the contemporary French philosopher Jacques Derrida.

Keisuke Saito will attempt to examine the late Derrida's theory of democracy and Jean-Luc Nancy's theory of the "inoperative community." His examination will be based on his critique of Arendt regarding the invisibility and possibility of "ethics" as developed in his book "I May Be Free: The Metaphysics of 'Freedom as Responsibility'," as well as on the debate surrounding Heidegger's and Levinas's theories of community, considered from the perspective of defending "freedom" as "pure possibility."

Yusuke Miyazaki will start from Derrida's theory of friendship, which he examined in his book "Jacques Derrida: Giving a Life after Death," to reconsider the theory of common sense based on the texts of Aristotle, Nietzsche, Agamben, and others. In doing so, he will explore how we can conceive of the construction of a commonality through remote affects not based on proximity, using the concept of "telepathy" that Derrida took up in relation to Freud as a clue.

On the day of the event, the first half will feature presentations by Saito and Miyazaki. After a break, the second half will be dedicated to an intensive discussion on "the community to come," moderated by Masato Goda.

This workshop is open to the public. We sincerely welcome the participation of anyone interested in the concept of community or in Derrida.
