Lecture (Symposium) Overview:
In this symposium, three young researchers of Derrida and Levinas will lead a discussion on the various issues addressed in Derrida's critique of Levinas, "Violence and Metaphysics" (first published in 1964), namely themes such as "violence," "infinity," and "the other." Specifically, the debate is expected to focus on at least the following three points: (1) how Derrida's concepts such as "ethics" and "injunction" were formed; (2) the substance of the concept of "violence" according to Derrida and Levinas; and (3) what relationship can and should be established between "the other" or "the infinite" (that which withdraws from limitation or determination) and "violence." Following presentations by the presenter and designated discussants on these points and a discussion among them, a comprehensive discussion will be held with the commentators. Furthermore, by allocating time for questions from online participants, it is hoped that a wide-ranging and open discussion will take place, engaging not only specialists in Derrida and Levinas studies but also a broader audience.
