This symposium will feature a discussion led by three up-and-coming Bergson researchers, focusing on how the theories of time and space proposed in early Bergsonian philosophy implicitly centered
on the problem of freedom.
Specifically,
the points of contention will be (1) how the concept of "freedom as expression," presented in his first major work, "Time and Free Will: An Essay on the Immediate Data of Consciousness,"
was carried over into his second major work, "Matter and Memory"; (2) how the theory of perception in "Matter and Memory"
and (3) its theory of memory each developed the understanding of "space" and "time" from the previous work.
After presentations and discussions on these points among the presenters, commentators will join to further deepen the debate from the perspective of contemporary theories of freedom.
Following this, a Q&A session with the audience will be held, aiming to create a forum for open discussion
that is accessible not only to experts in Bergson studies but also to a wider audience from various fields.
