Educational Objectives
Based on the Policy on Graduation Certification and Degree Conferral (Diploma Policy) of Keio University, the program aims to cultivate individuals who can acquire research and practical skills founded on specialized knowledge in nursing. These individuals will be able to identify challenges to be solved on their own with high ethical standards and innovative thinking unbound by existing frameworks. As researchers, educators, administrators, or practitioners, they will collaborate with other fields as necessary to tackle complex interdisciplinary problems, generate new knowledge that produces the best outcomes, and contribute to society. In addition, a Ph.D. in Nursing is conferred upon students who have fulfilled the prescribed requirements of the curriculum.
Competency Objectives
(1) Ability to Apply Nursing Knowledge, Skills, and Ethics
The ability to autonomously apply advanced specialized knowledge in nursing, as well as nursing and research ethics, to research and practice.
(2) Research Ability
The ability to learn research methodologies in nursing and related fields, autonomously conduct research in one's specialized area, and generate research outcomes.
(3) Ability to Solve Health-Related Issues
The ability to identify health issues in Japan and abroad and to address complex problems with creative thinking beyond conventional frameworks.
(4) Ability for Interdisciplinary Social Contribution
The ability to contribute to society by generating new knowledge in various fields of activity, holding an interdisciplinary perspective and collaborating with other fields as necessary.
Policy on Curriculum Design and Implementation (Curriculum Policy)
Curriculum Design
To cultivate the qualities and abilities set forth in the Policy on Graduation Certification and Degree Conferral (Diploma Policy), the Ph.D. Program in Nursing at the Graduate School of Health Management organizes a curriculum composed of advanced lecture courses and joint seminar courses to facilitate systematic learning. The curriculum is also designed to allow students to take courses from the master's program and common graduate school courses as needed.
Curriculum Implementation
Under this curriculum design, education is conducted through a combination of methods, including lectures, presentations, discussions, fieldwork, and distance learning.
Assessment of Learning Outcomes
In accordance with the assessment plan for the entire Juku, the assessment of learning outcomes for the competency objectives to be acquired through the curriculum of the Ph.D. Program in Nursing at the Graduate School of Health Management is conducted using direct indicators based on the grading criteria set for each course. It is also evaluated using quantitative, qualitative, direct, and indirect indicators, including GPA, degree attainment status, and various surveys and questionnaires such as student course evaluations.

(1) Ability to Apply Knowledge, Skills, and Ethics in Nursing: To develop the ability to autonomously apply advanced specialized knowledge of nursing, nursing ethics, and research ethics to research and practice, primarily through advanced lecture courses and joint seminar courses.
(2) Research Ability: To develop the ability to learn research methodologies in nursing and related fields, conduct research autonomously in each specialized area, and produce research outcomes, primarily through advanced lecture courses and joint seminar courses.
(3) Ability to Solve Health Issues: To develop the ability to identify domestic and international health issues and tackle complex problem-solving with innovative thinking that is not bound by existing frameworks, primarily through advanced lecture courses and joint seminar courses.
(4) Ability for Interdisciplinary Social Contribution: To develop the ability to contribute to society by creating new knowledge through collaboration with other fields as needed, while maintaining an interdisciplinary perspective in various fields of activity, primarily through joint seminar courses.
Admission Policy
Ideal Candidate Profile
The Ph.D. program in Nursing aims to cultivate individuals who will take on leading roles in various societal settings by utilizing advanced and interdisciplinary nursing knowledge and skills with a strong sense of ethics. We seek individuals with the following qualities:
(1) Possess an interest in humanity, health, nursing and medical care, and society, as well as a strong sense of ethics.
(2) Possess the motivation and critical awareness to explore issues concerning humanity, health, nursing and medical care, and society; excellent logical thinking, analytical, explanatory, and communication skills; and English proficiency sufficient for conducting research.
(3) Possess knowledge and skills related to nursing science and practice, and have a concrete and meaningful research concept.
(4) Aspire to become a leading researcher, administrator, educator, or practitioner who will further develop their career and abilities to contribute to the advancement of nursing science and the health of the public.
Basic Selection Policy
To accept such students, the selection for the entrance examination of the Ph.D. program in Nursing at the Graduate School of Health Management involves a multifaceted evaluation of the four elements of the admission policy. This evaluation is based on a document review, which includes the research proposal and English proficiency test scores, and an interview.
