Lecture (Symposium) Overview:
In this symposium, three young researchers of Derrida and Levinas will lead a discussion on the various issues raised in Derrida's critique of Levinas, "Violence and Metaphysics" (first published in 1964), namely the themes of "violence," "infinity," "the other," and so on. Specifically, the discussion is expected to focus on at least the following three points: (1) how Derrida's concepts such as "ethics" and "injunction" were formed; (2) the substance of the concept of "violence" by Derrida and Levinas; and (3) what relationship can and should be established between "the other" or "the infinite" (that which withdraws from limitation/definition) and "violence." Following presentations and mutual discussion on these points by the presenter and designated discussants, a comprehensive discussion will be held with the addition of commentators. Furthermore, by setting aside time for questions from online participants, it is hoped that a wide-ranging and open discussion will take place, not only among specialists in Derrida and Levinas studies but also for a broader audience.
