Lecture (Symposium) Overview: This symposium will feature discussions centered around three up-and-coming Bergson scholars, focusing on how the theories of time and space proposed in early Bergsonian philosophy had the problem of freedom latent at their core.
Specifically,
the points of contention will be issues such as (1) how the concept of "freedom as expression," presented in his first major work, "Time and Free Will: An Essay on the Immediate Data of Consciousness,"
was carried over into his second major work, "Matter and Memory," and how (2) the theory of perception and
(3) the theory of memory in "Matter and Memory" each developed the understanding of "space" and "time" from the previous work.
After presentations and discussions on these points among the presenters, the commentators will also participate in an attempt to further deepen the discussion from the perspective of contemporary theories of freedom.
Following this, a Q&A session with the audience will be held, with the aim of creating a forum for open discussion that is accessible not only to specialists in Bergson studies but also to a wide and diverse audience.
