As an attempt to bridge medicine and the humanities and social sciences, we have invited Professor Todd Meyers, Director of the NYU-Shanghai Center for Society, Health, and Medicine at New York University, to Keio. He will speak about addiction, chronic illness, and areas that are not easily connected to medical care. Psychiatrists Dr. Kudo and Dr. Sugiura will discuss approaches that enable autonomy by listening to the wishes of individuals hospitalized in psychiatric wards, and Selim Gökçe Atıcı of Stanford Anthropology will present an ethnography of care groups for people with drug addiction in Japan. Psychiatrist and medical anthropologist Dr. Naoko Miyaji and Hiroyasu Ino of the University of Tokyo School of Medicine will lead a discussion on the differences in perspective between the medical sciences and anthropology, as well as the possibilities for collaboration.
