Lecture Abstract
Today, with the annual number of deaths in Japan exceeding 1.3 million, the socio-cultural systems for dealing with the event of death are also undergoing constant change. In this presentation, we will invite Mr. Daisuke Tanaka, who has conducted research on the funeral industry, which is central to death work (the work of dealing with death and the deceased), to explore contemporary death and end-of-life care with the audience through a variety of case studies.
Speaker Profile
Completed the Doctoral Programs at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, The University of Tokyo. Currently an Academic Researcher at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, The University of Tokyo. Ph.D. in Arts and Sciences. Major publications include "Sōgigyō no Esunogurafi" (An Ethnography of the Funeral Industry) (The University of Tokyo Press, 2017); "Raifu Endingu to shite no Gendai Sōgi: Girei to Jinsei Sekkei no 'Aida'" (Contemporary Funerals as Life-Ending: Between Ritual and Life Planning), "Qualitative Psychology Forum," No. 8 (2016); and "Sōgigyō no Shigoto ni Miru Senmonka no Kea to Safaringu: Shi to Sōgi o Meguru Shokugyōteki Kisei no Kansetsu kara" (Professional Care and Suffering in the Funeral Industry: From the Juncture of Occupational Mechanisms Surrounding Death and Funerals) in "Kunō suru Koto no Kibō" (The Hope of Suffering), edited by Yukiyo Ukegai (Kyodo Isho Shuppansha, 2014).
