Abstract
In situations requiring public decision-making, such as the formulation of basic plans, even the best-laid policies will remain mere paper plans unless they are shared by many and put into practice. Therefore, a process of discussion is essential to work toward common goals. However, it is not easy to share common goals, especially when there are differences in levels of interest, values, and stakes. This study aims to clarify, through experiments, surveys, and on-site practice, what kind of discussion forum design can help overcome differing values and facilitate efforts toward common goals. This program, set in Hokkaido, also concurrently disseminates its research findings through collaborative practice with stakeholders involved in environmental policy on the ground. Furthermore, this program functions as a platform for promoting interdisciplinary research in the social sciences, including social psychology, economics, and sociology. This lecture will present an interim report on its findings.
