Overview: Medical anthropology has re-examined the meanings of "care" and "relationships" by situating psychiatric care within cultural and historical contexts. In this symposium, we will welcome Professor Arthur Kleinman, a pioneer in medical anthropology and cultural psychiatry, who will give a lecture titled "Care of the Elderly: Lessons Learned from Collaborative Cross-Cultural Interdisciplinary Research in China." We will also welcome Professor Laurence J. Kirmayer, a world-renowned authority in these fields, who will deliver a lecture titled "Toward a Poetics of Illness Experience." In the session on dementia research, Professor Kwanwook Kim, President of the Korean Society for Medical Anthropology; Professor Takashi Iguchi of the University of Tokyo; Mr. Ryoji Noritake of the Health and Global Policy Institute; and Junko Kitanaka of Keio University will present their research and engage in a discussion. A presentation session by early-career researchers is also scheduled. We will welcome as commentators Dr. Jessica Carlsson Lohmann and Dr. Charlotte Sonne, psychiatrists from Denmark, and Professor Vincenzo Di Nicola, President of the World Association of Social Psychiatry.
