17 Majors and 2 Sections with Wide-ranging Specializations to Open the Door to Knowledge
The Faculty of Letters has a single department, the “Department of Humanities and Social Science,” under which there are five fields of study and 17 majors that explore culture, society, and human nature, as well as two sections in Natural Sciences and Foreign Languages, which offer broad, interdisciplinary programs of study.
Philosophy Field
Philosophy
This major focuses on philosophy, which has the longest tradition of any academic discipline, with a particular emphasis on Western philosophy. As such, it draws on the body of scholarly achievements built up by our forebears while also incorporating new material and perspectives.
Ethics
Through dialogue with thinkers from both Eastern and Western traditions, and using familiar issues from contemporary society as starting points, the Major in Ethics explores human agency.
Aesthetics and Science of Arts
This major conducts education and research in the fields of aesthetics and the science of arts, Western art history, Japanese and Asian art history, musicology, arts management, and other arts-related disciplines.
History Field
Japanese History
This major involves empirical research on Japanese history from antiquity to the modern day. Students will learn about paleography and the handling of historical documents while developing the capacity to uncover truths on their own.
Asian History
This major provides students with a historical perspective on the politics, economics, society, culture, and international relations of Asia and the Middle East, and fosters an understanding of the different values of the people in these regions.
Western History
This major equips students with skills in reconstructing empirically historical events in the Western world from antiquity to the present day, using primary and secondary sources in relevant European languages.
Archaeology and Ethnology
This major explores history and culture by integrating a diverse range of material evidence. Through the analysis of our vast collection and fieldwork both in Japan and abroad, it conducts wide-ranging research covering a variety of regions and time periods.
Literature Field
Japanese Literature
This major focuses on Japanese literature and language, and aims to consider a wide range of Japanese culture, including arts and sciences, performing arts, and folklore.
Chinese Literature
While this major focuses on Chinese language studies, classical literature, and contemporary literature, it also covers all aspects of Chinese culture from antiquity to the present day, including history, thought, and the performing arts.
English and American Literature
Students in this major study the English language and the literatures of Britain, the United States, and the wider English-speaking world. Areas of study also include cultural studies, mythology, the visual arts, film, music, comparative literature, and gender studies.
German Literature
This major engages with the humanities in the German-speaking world, focusing on the study of language and literature, as well as adjacent fields such as philosophy, music, theater, art, and media studies.
French Literature
This major focuses on French language and literature, with wide-ranging studies of society, culture, art, and thought. Cultural history, art criticism, French-speaking literature, and Franco-Japanese theatrical exchange are also covered.
Human Relations Field
Sociology
Students study across the fields of sociology, social psychology, and cultural anthropology in order to comprehensively understand people in the modern world from the three perspectives of society, psychology, and culture.
Psychology
The major is characterized as an experimental science with an emphasis on experimental psychology in areas such as perception, cognition, behavior, learning, development, biology, and neurology.
Education
Focusing on the four areas of philosophy of education, history of education, comparative education, and educational psychology, this major explores the possibilities of rich human development activities that are not limited to educational practice in schools.
Human Sciences
This is an interdisciplinary major that, drawing upon traditional fields of study such as psychology, social psychology, sociology, and cultural anthropology, aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of human beings.
Natural Sciences Course/Foreign Languages Course
Natural Sciences
To understand human beings as part of nature, students learn the logical concepts of the natural sciences, including biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics, astronomy, geology, anthropology, and psychology.
Foreign Language
This course offers classes in Greek, Latin, Korean, Spanish, Italian, and Russian, as well as related fields.
