Five-Year BA/MA Program with University of Cologne

The Faculty of Economics has an agreement with the University of Cologne (Universität zu Köln / University of Cologne) for a combined BA/MA Program. Students enrolled in the Faculty of Economics can apply to this program. Students who satisfy the graduation requirements of both institutions will be awarded a Bachelor of Arts (Economics) from Keio and a Master’s degree in Economics from the University of Cologne.

Program Outline

The maximum number of participants is five per year. The study plans for students who participate in this Program are shown in the diagrams below.

PEARL students are accepted into a five-year program, spending their first three years at Keio and their fourth and fifth years at the University of Cologne. Application and selection take place around March of the third year; graduation in the spring semester of the fourth year (awarded a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Keio University University); graduation in the spring semester of the fifth year (awarded a Master of Science from the University of Cologne).  For Type A and Type B students, the program takes 5.5 years, spending the first through spring semesters of their fourth year at Keio and the fall through spring semester of their sixth year at the University of Cologne. Application and selection take place around March of the third year; graduation in the fall semester of the fourth year (awarded a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Keio University University); graduation in the spring semester of the sixth year (awarded a Master of Science from the University of Cologne).

*Type A/B students refers to students whose study at Keio begins in April and whose principal language of instruction is Japanese.

Classes at Cologne are offered in either German or English. Students can satisfy their Master’s degree requirements by taking courses taught in English only.

About Cologne University

Founded in 1388, the University of Cologne is one of the oldest universities in Germany with an outstanding reputation for its research and education. The Cologne Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences (WiSo-Faculty), to which the participants of this program will belong, is Germany’s largest and most reputable Faculty of its type and offers a wide range of study fields and specializations.

The University of Cologne has international exchange programs with Keio University at both the university and the Faculty of Economics levels. Moreover, both institutions are member schools of the CEMS MIM program.

Eligibility and Application Guideline

Applicants must satisfy the following requirements at the time they apply to this Program:

  • Applicants must be a Keio student enrolled in the Faculty of Economics and have successfully completed five semesters (for PEARL students) and six semesters (for Type A/B students);

  • have a TOEFL iBT score of 100 or IELTS 7.0 or more*;

    (*PEARL students are exempted from this English requirement.)

  • a minimum Grade Point Average (cumulative GPA) of 2.3; and

  • have obtained at least 8 Keio credits in the area of statistics and/or mathematics.*

* Credits for “Introduction to Econometrics” and various mathematics courses offered at Hiyoshi can be included here. PEARL students can fulfill this requirement by earning 4 credits from among elective mathematics courses (e.g. “Introduction to Calculus,” “Linear Algebra,” “Mathematics for Economics”) and “Introduction to Econometrics,” in addition to taking the mandatory “Statistics 1 & 2” (4 credits).

Screening

Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of their application documents and an interview.

Selection Schedule

Students in their 3rd year are eligible for selection for this program. Applicants who are pre-selected by Keio will proceed to the final selection conducted by the University of Cologne.

Academic Fees

For the first of the two years of study at Cologne, students from Keio will pay their tuition fees to Keio and will be exempted from paying tuition fees for Cologne. For the second year, they will pay regular MSc tuition fees to Cologne.
