Increasing Motivation Through Exposure to Specialized Medical Sciences Fields from the First Year
Aiming for the School of Medicine After Experiencing the COVID-19 Pandemic
I experienced the COVID-19 pandemic during my third year of junior high school, which made me realize once again the importance of healthcare in supporting the foundations of people's lives. Having been interested in STEM subjects throughout junior high and high school, I decided to aim for the School of Medicine out of a desire to be involved in healthcare myself.
I chose to apply to Keio University because a mock lecture I attended at an open campus during my third year of high school was extremely interesting, and I felt that I wanted to take such classes. I was happy to have the opportunity to take a class from the professor who gave that mock lecture as early as my first year. The fact that it is a comprehensive university where I can encounter various academic fields and interact with diverse people was also an attraction.
Learning That Connects with High School and Learning That Differs
Looking back on the classes as a whole, the experiments in physics, chemistry, and biology were interesting. In particular, the physics experiments allowed me to experience firsthand the many theories I had studied for entrance exams, and it was fun to feel the connection with my high school learning. The classes at Hiyoshi Campus, where I could freely choose from many general education subjects, were a valuable experience that allowed me to pursue my own interests, unlike my learning up until high school.
The classes where I could hear about the specialized fields of the School of Medicine professors also left an impression. Being exposed to various fields of medical sciences from as early as the first year became an opportunity to think about my future and increased my motivation.
The Rewards of Club Activities and Expanding Friendships Through Circles
Many of my peers put effort into various things such as sports, research, and programming, in addition to their studies, and they are full of enthusiasm and energy. After spending a year here, I was surprised by the high level of concentration and the skillful use of time by those from Keio's integrated schools. I believe there is much we can learn from each other, as they have experiences different from mine.
Also, while club activities are popular at the Keio University School of Medicine, I started equestrianism in university. Thanks to the kind guidance of my seniors, I feel growth little by little in daily practice and matches, which is rewarding. Collaboration with other universities in the fields of medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy is also progressing. Furthermore, because I want to value the human relationships that can only be built at a comprehensive university, I also belong to an orchestra circle open to all undergraduate students. Activities with diverse peers are a valuable opportunity to expand my friendships and perspective.
Six Years to Broaden Horizons Toward the Future
I am still exploring my future, but since a great deal of knowledge and experience is necessary to understand the psychology and circumstances of patients and their families and to provide effective medical care, I want to make these six years a time to build a wide range of human relationships and broaden my horizons.
Here, there is an environment where we can improve each other while being stimulated by our peers. Studying for entrance exams is difficult and requires perseverance, but please do your best by encouraging each other with friends, moving at your own pace without rushing, and occasionally taking breaks that suit you. I am rooting for you.
