A Unique Strength of Keio University Lies in Its Collaboration with the Mita Hou-sou-kai

Balancing Specialized Legal Studies with a Broad Education

I chose to enroll in the Department of Law, Faculty of Law at Keio University because I wanted to gain a broad education while specializing in legal studies. Although I was interested in law, I wasn't entirely sure which specific area I wanted to focus on. The fact that there are professors active at the forefront of every legal field was extremely attractive to me.

I also felt that the system allowing for a wide range of study in foreign languages, social sciences, and natural sciences was another major draw. I believed that learning about subjects outside of my specialization would be useful for looking at things from multiple perspectives and would help me cultivate the skills necessary for any future career path.

Reaffirming the Importance of Multi-faceted Perspectives

One class I found particularly interesting was "Legal Practice Seminar II (Civil Law I)," which is a specialized subject for the Legal Profession Course. What left a lasting impression was learning that a case isn't necessarily resolved just by examining whether it fits the wording of a statute or precedent. The more specific a case is, the more the "raw opinions" behind the arguments of both parties become visible. It reaffirmed for me that a multi-faceted perspective is essential to derive a reasonable conclusion based on those "raw opinions."

Furthermore, I believe the ability to hear lectures from legal professionals through collaboration with the alumni organization known as the Mita Hou-sou-kai is a unique strength of Keio University. When I was unsure about my career path, being able to directly hear from people active in those fields helped me get a real sense of the atmosphere, for which I was very grateful.

Club Activities are Also Opportunities for Challenges

On the other hand, I am involved in the management of a club called "Juhachinin-kai," which many students from the Faculty of Law belong to. There, my colleagues and I collaborated to think about what kind of opportunities would be beneficial for considering future career paths, and we organized tours of law firms and sessions to hear from seniors attending law school.

Unlike high school clubs, university club activities allow students to make their own decisions regarding budgets and events. While this comes with responsibility, there is a level of freedom to do almost anything if you try, making it an excellent opportunity and environment for those who want to challenge themselves.

A Career I Want to Dedicate My Life To

In the future, I hope to work for the National Police Agency as a member of the national public service (comprehensive track). It is a profession where one constantly thinks about how to protect citizens from crimes, accidents, and disasters. After careful consideration to ensure I would have no regrets, this was the job I felt I wanted to dedicate my life to. I want to utilize legal and logical thinking to strive toward solving problems while remaining conscious of "raw opinions."

Keio University provides an environment where you can study what you want to study and take on the challenges you want to face. Please work hard toward your future while envisioning what you want to do at university. I am rooting for you.
