Studying Economics at the Highest Level with Diverse Peers
Keio University: A Place to Expand Your Values
In the regional area where I spent my time until high school, I only had opportunities to interact with people from similar backgrounds. Therefore, I thought that by enrolling in Keio University, where students with various backgrounds gather from all over Japan, I would be able to expand my own values. I chose the Faculty of Economics because of an event during my high school years that made me keenly aware of the decline of the Japanese economy, and I wanted to explore the causes of the recession.
Since entering the university, I have realized that there are many different types of people enrolled, such as those who came to Tokyo from regional areas like me, those with extensive overseas experience, and those who have attended private schools in the city since elementary school. While receiving a lot of inspiration daily from these diverse peers, I am engaged in studying economics at the highest level.
Acquiring Economic Thinking in Seminars
Currently, I belong to a seminar specializing in macroeconomics, which looks at the economy from a large, national perspective. There are about 50 students in total from the 3rd and 4th years, and the classes are centered on discussion. Professors who are authorities in economics provide feedback on the conclusions that students derive themselves. Through such activities, we acquire economic thinking and the ability to logically explain economic phenomena.
The seminar is also a place to expand and deepen friendships. Regardless of the organizations you belong to, such as circles or clubs, you can meet unique people and naturally build close relationships.
Opportunities to Learn in English with International Students
Another attraction of the Faculty of Economics is the PEARL program, where you can study economics entirely in English for four years. Even if you are not a PEARL student, it is possible to take classes offered by PEARL and attend lectures in English alongside international students.
In my first year, I took the PEARL "Physics" course. It was a valuable opportunity to be exposed to English, and above all, I was happy to make friends with international students.
Best Memories in the Athletic Association Jyunko Baseball Club
Additionally, I belong to the Athletic Association Jyunko Baseball Club. The Athletic Association is an organization that aims to foster future leaders who will become a "source of honorable character" and "a paragon of intellect and morals for the entire nation," as advocated by Keio University through sports. We also operate under the slogan of becoming the best baseball club in Japan in terms of character, while simultaneously aiming to be number one in Japan at tournaments. As a result of those efforts, the moment we achieved a top-four national ranking is my best memory. Surprisingly, many people in the Athletic Association start their sport in university or come from schools that are not sports powerhouses.
At university, learning, experiences, and friendships that you could never have imagined until high school are waiting for you. I think studying for entrance exams can be difficult in many ways, but please seize your acceptance. We are also waiting for you to join the Athletic Association.
