The Keio Pen Mark

慶應義塾のペンマーク

Origin and Meaning of the Pen Mark

Around 1885, students drew inspiration from a passage in one of their textbooks—“The pen is mightier than the sword”—to design their own cap badge. It was subsequently endorsed by many other students and alumni, and was formally recognized. It has remained in use to this day. As reflected in its origin, the Pen Mark embodies the value and dignity of learning. It represents Keio University and stands as a widely recognized symbol in society.

Usage Scenarios and Methods

It also serves as the foundational representation of Keio University. It should be given the highest priority for use on official items in a variety of contexts. When displaying a symbol in combination with the university name on items such as business cards, please use the Pen Mark.

The Keio Emblem

慶應義塾のエンブレム

Origin and Meaning of the Emblem

The coat of arms of Keio University (referred to as the Emblem for broader use as a communication tool) was created in 1989 at the request of the University of Queensland, Australia. It is engraved on a stone pillar along the colonnade in the Great Court, a large central courtyard at the University of Queensland, alongside the coats of arms of other internationally renowned universities. The shape of the Emblem designed at that time is said to have been modeled on the one carved into the wall of the Memorial Room of the Old University Library.

Usage Scenarios and Methods

The Emblem is a composite design that combines the five elements representing the Keio University brand: the Pen Mark, Sanshokuki, university name, year of establishment, and motto (“The pen is mightier than the sword”). Accordingly, it should be used on its own—without adding any other elements—as a single-point identifier in external communication media such as brochures, advertisements, and websites.
