Keio University placed 10th among Japanese research institutions (excluding National Research and Development Agencies) in the Nature Index Research Leaders 2026 rankings, which were announced by Springer Nature on June 10, 2026.
The Nature Index tracks research articles published in 178 publications over the preceding year (January 1–December 31, 2025). Originally focused on the natural and health sciences, from 2026, the rankings’ scope has been expanded to include applied and social sciences publications. Institutions’ research output is ranked using a number of metrics including “Share,” which measures their contribution to a given subject area.
Keio placed 472nd globally in the Research Leaders rankings and 13th in Japan among all institutions ranked. When broken down by subject area, Keio was ranked 7th in Japan for health sciences, 12th in Japan for biological sciences, and 12th in Japan for physical sciences.
