Keio University has established various support systems to help faculty and staff achieve a work-life balance.

The support available and the systems applied vary depending on the type of employment at Keio University. For your reference, we have listed the systems applicable to full-time faculty and staff. Marriage

Use of Maiden Name

Faculty and staff working at Keio University may continue to use their maiden name (the surname on their family register prior to marriage, etc.) if they wish, even after changing their surname on the family register.

Pregnancy

Preserved Leave (for Infertility Treatment)

Preserved leave can be used in half-day units for the purpose of infertility treatment. Please submit a prescribed certificate or a doctor's medical certificate along with the application.

Hospital Visits (During Pregnancy)

If a pregnant employee needs to visit a hospital during working hours for health guidance or medical examinations, she may do so as paid leave during working hours upon application.

Maternity Leave (Pre- and Post-natal)

Faculty and staff can take leave for 7 weeks before childbirth (14 weeks for multiple pregnancies) and 8 weeks after childbirth.

Childbirth

Lump-sum Allowance for Childbirth and Nursing / Family Lump-sum Allowance for Childbirth and Nursing

When an insured person or a dependent of the Keio Gijuku Health Insurance Association gives birth, they can receive a Lump-sum Allowance for Childbirth and Nursing.

Childbirth Allowance

If an insured person of the Keio Gijuku Health Insurance Association gives birth and receives no or low salary during the period of 42 days before and 56 days after childbirth, they can receive an allowance.

Subsidy for Childbirth Expenses

Subsidies for expenses are available when Keio University faculty/staff or their family members (spouse/children) give birth at Keio University Hospital.

Childcare

Childcare Leave

Faculty and staff who are raising a child may take a leave of absence if they wish, in accordance with prescribed standards. Please refer to the various regulations for details.

Childcare Leave at Birth

If maternity leave is not taken, faculty and staff can take a leave of absence for up to 4 weeks within 8 weeks from the date of birth or the expected date of birth, whichever is later, if they so wish. Please refer to the collection of various regulations for details.

Childcare Time

Female employees raising a child under one year of age can take childcare time (paid) twice a day for 30 minutes each, or once a day for 60 minutes, upon request.

Shortened Working Hours (Childcare)

Faculty and staff who meet the conditions for childcare leave may shorten their working hours by up to 2 hours per day, in 30-minute units, at the start or end of the workday (for nursing staff, only at the end of the workday).

Nursing Care Leave for Children

Faculty and staff raising a child who has not yet entered the second grade of elementary school can take leave to care for the child in the event of illness, etc., in units of one day or 30 minutes. Please refer to the various regulations for details.

Breastfeeding, Milking, and Women's Restrooms

Subsidy for Sick Child and Post-Sickness Childcare

If a faculty or staff member working at Keio University uses sick child or post-sickness childcare services because their child has a sudden illness on a working day and cannot receive normal childcare services, they can receive a subsidy of 6,000 yen per day (up to the amount paid by the individual). (Up to 10 days per year per child).

Keio University Nursery School (Shinanomachi District only)

If a full-time faculty or staff member working in the Shinanomachi District has no one to care for their child at the end of maternity or childcare leave, and it is difficult to enter a public or private childcare facility, the child can be cared for until an acceptance facility is decided.

Nursing Care

Nursing Care Leave

Faculty and staff who have a family member in need of care can take nursing care leave in units of one day or 30 minutes to provide care for the family member. Please refer to the various regulations for details.

Nursing Care Leave of Absence

Faculty and staff who have a family member in need of care may take a leave of absence in accordance with prescribed standards. Please refer to the various regulations for details.

Preserved Leave (for Nursing Care)

Full-time staff working at Keio University can use preserved leave for up to 75 days per eligible family member when a spouse, parent, child, or spouse's parent requires care due to injury or illness.

Shortened Working Hours (Nursing Care)

Faculty and staff who meet the conditions for nursing care leave of absence may shorten their working hours by up to 2 hours per day, in 30-minute units, at the start or end of the workday (for nursing staff, only at the end of the workday).

Entering the Media Center with Children

  To support those who are engaged in learning and research while raising children, the Media Center allows entry with small children.

Payment of Childcare Expenses from KAKENHI

  Childcare service usage fees incurred in the following cases can be paid from the direct expenses of KAKENHI. 

  • When participating in an academic conference held on a holiday

  • When an overnight stay is required to participate in an academic conference

In addition, when hosting an academic conference or research meeting related to a subsidized project, expenses incurred for setting up childcare facilities within the venue can also be paid.
