Wayland Lecture

"Keio Gijuku has never closed for a single day" (Autobiography of Fukuzawa Yukichi)

Formally, it is called the Yukichi Fukuzawa-Francis Wayland Memorial Lecture. On May 15, Keio 4 (1868), amidst the Boshin War, a battle between the Imperial forces and the Shogitai took place in Ueno. While the booming of cannons echoed throughout Edo, Yukichi Fukuzawa, undeterred, lectured on Wayland's imported economics textbook as usual, demonstrating to his students that academic study could not be neglected for even a single day. In commemoration of this event, Keio University holds an annual memorial lecture on May 15, designated as the Yukichi Fukuzawa-Francis Wayland Memorial Lecture Day.
