Long-standing Initiatives

This section introduces initiatives such as public speaking events and lectures that have been held throughout the long history of Keio University.

Mita Public Speaking Event

The methods of public speaking and debate were introduced to Japan by Yukichi Fukuzawa and the early students of Keio University. In 1874, the Mita Public Speaking Event was organized, and since then, it has been held every year at the Mita Enzetsukan (Public Speaking Hall), Japan's first public speaking hall.

Wayland Lecture

Keio University holds an annual memorial lecture on May 15th, designated as Yukichi Fukuzawa-Francis Wayland Lecture Day.

Shinzo Koizumi Memorial Essay Contest for High School Students

This contest began in 1976 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the passing of former President Shinzo Koizumi, with the aim of contributing to the improvement of the writing and expression skills of young people.

Recipients of Honorary Degree of Doctor from Keio University

Keio University confers Honorary Degrees of Doctor (Doctorate Honoris Causa) upon those who have made great achievements in the fields of education and culture, not limited to just Keio graduates. The first Honorary Degree of Doctor in Keio was conferred in 1953, and Keio now boasts a long list of honorary doctors who have made significant contributions to humanity.
