A major paradigm shift is currently occurring in wireless communications. Notable examples include the shift from voice traffic to IP data traffic, the rapid increase in wireless communications such as wireless LANs, and the convergence of terrestrial broadcasting with communications due to digitalization. It is not a distant future where digital networks will develop further, and everything from publishing, music, and video to game distribution will be conducted via communications. In three years, it may be commonplace for everyone to enjoy newspapers and magazines on their wireless mobile devices. To realize such a ubiquitous network society, I believe we need to build not only a convenient and flexible personal communication environment but also a secure and highly reliable social infrastructure that includes privacy, as well as a cultural infrastructure imbued with a cultural richness originating from Japan's refined sensibilities.

I believe that future researchers and developers will be required to possess not only technical skills but also a deep liberal arts education and refined sensibilities, both at a high level. To achieve this, it is important for them to develop a deep interest in various things from a young age, honing their sensibilities while cultivating the insight to carefully examine what technological needs are in demand in the world. I am involved in the education and research of students, believing it is increasingly important to encourage ambitious students with natural talents to fully develop their abilities and to carefully nurture leaders who can create new trends and take the technological lead in fundamental communication technologies. Currently, I am enjoying conducting research with nearly 30 students on technological challenges in areas such as next-generation broadband mobile communications, network security, photonic networks, and ad hoc networks, aiming to create pioneering and innovative technologies for the realization of a ubiquitous network society.
